On Opening Day Mike Scioscia and the Angels gave off a distinct impression that 2009 may turn out to be just more of the same for the Halos. With concerns about the rotation and even Saunders arm, Joe went out and threw a gem. He went 6.2 innings surrendering just three hits, with two strikeouts. Always humble Saunders turned the credit over to his teammates, “made pitches when I needed them and got great defense from my guys.”One of the big questions entering this season surrounded the offense, last night, at least those problems were addressed. Bobby Abreu singled on his first at bat as an Angel, continuing his streak of 13 straight Opening Days with a hit. Howie Kendrick who I identified as being key to the Angels hopes this season got a head start last night. The Angels second-baseman drove in their first run of the season with a single to right field in the bottom of the third. In the fifth inning he crushed the Halos first home run of the season pacing the Angels to a 3-0 lead. The heart of the Angels lineup, Kendrick-Abreu-Guerrero-Hunter didn’t disappoint last night combining for six hits and all three RBIs. After Saunders terrific performance Scioscia and company turned to the Angels capable bullpen. Set-up men Jose Arredendo and Scot Shields sat down all four batters they faced before new Angels closer Brian Fuentes made his debut. Brian converted with the expertise Halos fans have come to expect from their closer, three up, three down and the Angels had their first victory of 2009. For Fuentes it marked his 18th straight converted save, and for the Angels it was their first Opening Day shutout since 1978.Tonight: Angels vs. AthleticsDustin Moseley (RHP) vs. Trevor Cahill (RHP)7:05 PM PT

Rockies lose finale, but take two of three from Astros

Somehow, twelve hits — six of them for extra bases — only translated into four runs, as the Rockies dropped the series finale on Sunday to the Houston Astros.  With a one-run lead in the eighth inning, Brian Fuentes played with fire and wound up getting burned as he surrendered a go-ahead single...

Shabbat Shalom: Friday Wrap-Up

Welcome to 2009. I am real upbeat and excited about what this year has in store. I truly believe that 2009 is going to be a special year for myself and Dynasty. Went to the Orange Bowl last night…it was much colder than I thought it would be. Going to the National Championship game next Thursday. You know what team I will be rooting for. Flying Rulon Davis into South Florida...

According to the Denver Post, a handful of GM's believe that the Colorado Rockies are going to indeed shop left-handed reliever Brian Fuentes for a starting pitcher. Post writer, Troy Renck, believes that the Chicago White Sox might dangle Jon Garland Colorado's way and shore up the White Soxs' pen ...

Looking Ahead to 2008 - Bobby Abreu

After coming over in a big trade in 2006 and sparking the Yankees to the division title, Bobby Abreu's second season in pinstripes started slowly before picking up steam. The Yankees had a decision to make at the end of 2007 about picking up his $16 million option for 2008, which they ended up ...

Rotoworld: Phils designate Matt Smith for assignment

Smith opened the 2007 season as the Phillies top left-handed reliever, but his stay was short lived. He missed almost the entire season with Tommy John surgery. Smith, 28, was part of the 2006 Bobby Abreu trade. After the deal, the Phillies wasted no time in using him despite having little Major Leag...

Game 2: Athletics 6, Angels 4

Dustin Moseley did his part to build upon what Joe Saunders accomplished in Monday’s Opener, but the Angels’ offense couldn’t come through in a tough loss against the division rival A’s. The Angels got to A’s rookie pitcher Trevor Cahill early, but after he settled down, the Halos had a tough time getting anything going, leaving [...]

Don’t expect to see Paulie cuddling up to any rally monkeys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnBubnHgXWw For some reason, I just can’t see Paul Konerko talking about his new pet monkey. On the heels of last week's surprising deal for Nick Swisher came the hot rumor of Paul Konerko going to Los Angeles/Anaheim for either Howie Kendrick or Chone Figgins a...

Where's Cabrera going?

It appears the Los Angeles Angels made an interesting offer for Miguel Cabrera. SI.com is reporting that the Angels offered Howie Kendrick, Jeff Mathis, one of two top pitching prospects in Nick Adenhart or Ervin Santana and another mid-level pitching prospect. But the Marlins came back and asked for...

The A's Open Without Steam

When I was in that scorched earth middle ground before becoming a college graduate, it really wasn't a good time. College for me was like a prison work-release program, because I was paying my own way with multiple jobs and escalating debt at a school (Syracuse) that kept raising the tuition rates to the point of scandal (up over 30% in my three years there). A good chunk of...
