Most who know me, know that I enjoy the stolen base in baseball more than anyone they've ever met in their life. So since the season has come and gone, and the Red Sox players have popped the champagne, let's look at the two players who were the best base stealers in the Minor Leagues this year. I would talk about Jose Reyes of the New York Mets for leading the entire Major Leagues this year with 78, but tired towards the end of the season in his attempt for 100 steals as soon as Rickey Henderson arrived to coach first for his team. Too bad Jose. Maybe you'll get there someday? Eric Orlando Young Jr. Position: 2B Parent Club: Colorado Rockies Born: 05/25/1985 Height: 5' 10" Weight: 180 Bats: S Throws: R The son of former Major Leage Star Eric Young who once played in Colorado amongst other stops. Junior stole 73 bases in 130 Games this year at single A Modesto. Making him one of only two players in the entire Minor Leagues this year to reach at least 70. He also hit .291 with 63 RBI's and 113 runs scored, and was only caught 18 times in his 91 attempted thefts. He stole 83 bases in 2006 in 128 games in his first full pro season. Downside is he struckout 105 times and reached base at a percentage of only .359 for Modesto this year. He could be playing for Colorado by 2010. Ovandy Suero Position: Outfield Parent Club: Detroit Tigers Born: 06/20/1982 Height: 5' 10" Weight: 160 Bats: S Throws: R The other player to reach 70 stolen bases in the Minor Leagues, with 75 in 116 games. He was caught 21 times in SIngle A Lakeland action and managed to hit .252. Downside is the same problem as Young Jr. with 95 K's this year and his OBP of only .306 was dreadful. A long shot for the Majors.
