Like most fans out there, I was completely fine with the Vicente Padilla deal. He cost the prorated league minimum and has pitched well thus far. However, I do have a problem with the high wire act he seems to do every game, and it's reflective of his general skill.

In Jon Garland's case, while I would like to be content with his performance, I believe Tony Abreu was a stiff price to pay, especially with the existence of guys like Charlie Haeger already doing well.

That said, why in the hell didn't the Dodgers make right on one of the most lopsided trades in history and bring Pedro Martinez back for far less than he is worth? Not only does Martinez actually have the cachet to put butts in seats and sell jerseys, he has also been a damn good pitcher this year. Martinez is averaging 89 mph and is regularly hitting 92 mph on his fastball. That kind of stuff is more than enough given his always dynamic change and slider.

Seriously though, the dude has just 6 walks to 34 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings pitched this year, and it's good for an otherworldly 5.67 K/BB ratio. Of course, that isn't even close to Pedro's heyday, when he was putting up better than an 8 to 1 ratio, but it's still good enough to rank him among the best in the game if he had been pitching all year.

Now why didn't we sign him again?

Monday thread: Pedro poised for postseason return

Acquired as a modest rotation upgrade, Pedro Martinez, who mastered the Mets with eight shutout innings last night, has rekindled the fire that burns for October baseball. But will he be denied? When the Phillies fetched Pedro Martinez from the Dominican Republic earlier this summer, they breached the space-time continuum, opening a portal to the Pedro of the late '90s rather...

Beat writer recounts banner year in Baseballtown

Double-A Reading was home to the best young talent in the Phillies’ chain and was a stepping stone for eight rehabbing Phillies, including Pedro Martinez, who packed FirstEnergy Stadium with a record 9,953 fans. Omar: History is a Great Teacher: Resign Dalgado

Does the name Pedro Martinez ring a bell Omar? It should. You were smart enough to bring him to New York and it was a brilliant move because it started a whirlwind movement by Latin players who wanted to come to New York to be in his presence. Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Johan Santana, all expressed publicly that coming to the Mets to play with Pedro was paramount in their decision...

Pedro Hammers The Final Nail In; Mets Lose 1-0

In 2007, the Phillies took the division from the Mets on the last day of the season after the Mets held a 7-game lead with 17 games to play.  Pedro Martinez faced the Phillies once in those last 17 games and the Mets lost that game. In 2008, the Mets held a 3½ game lead over [...]

8-inning gem sweeps (& eliminates!) Mets

Are Pitch Count Totals Worrisome?

When a guy hasn’t thrown 130 pitches in over eight years – back when he was at the very peak of his Hall of Fame career – then proceeds to do it seemingly out of nowhere, it garners some attention.  Pedro Martinez reached that now infamous plateau on Sunday against his former club, and had [...]

Giants Roundtable Week 2: Dallas Cowboys

The Redskins chanelled the Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox and called the Giants “daddy” as the Giants continued their dominance of the Redskins, especially from the defensive side of the ball.  Where if not for the fake field goal touchdown the Redskins would have gone three straight games with only putting up 7 [...]
