Where's All The Hoopla For Ken Griffey Jr's 600th Home Run?

As much negative press ESPN gave Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa for their alleged steroid use, you'd think they would take the initiative and celebrate a man who did things the right way.

Ken Griffey may be the first player in the last 35 years to reach 600 without cheating, and he's approaching the milestone in utter silence.

well said

thanks, I'm glad others are agreeing with this stance.

Nice piece.

Junior still has the sweetest swing in baseball, even if the legs aren't there like they used to be.

They're not interested cause it's not controversial. I mean what about last year when Frank Thomas hit 500. It got some coverage on Sportscenter for a bit, but not much more.
600, is definitely another level, and I agree with you, nothing is being done about it.
Griffey has been a favorite of mine since day 1 (I still have a signed Topps Rookie Card). He has always been a classy guy around the league and in the ball club, and community. I think it's pretty outrageous that #600 is probably going to be hit without any hooplah, this is a milestone for, IMO, a future hall of famer

how do you know he doesn't use HGH or the like? You train w/ him?

It's pretty easy to see his swing is the reason, he's been hitting HR's since he came into the league. One of the smoothest swings and greatest players of his generation.

Especially since he was hurt for a while and had to endure a lot of critisism about whether he would actually ever be as good as his dad.

The only people guaranteed to know if Griffey has taken anything is him and god.

But if you look at the advantages of steroids and HGH, they arent consistent with Griffey's career. The guy is constantly injured and usually takes his sweet time getting healthy again. If he WAS taking HGH he should ask for his money back, because it obviously didn't work.

ha you are so right sport. that was funny. Dude! give me my $$ back these steroids are bunk.

I wish Griffey wouldn't have spent so much time being injured. Then he'd be the one breaking the HR record and Bond's probably would have retired a few seasons ago. At least then, I wouldn't have had to have listened to the media and fans alike ramble on about how terrible of a person Barry Bonds is.

Agreed. Despite the crap he's gone through, Jr. has remained one of the classiest guys in baseball. It wasn't all that long ago when the MLB was pushing HIM as their posterboy. He never blamed anyone for his injuries, he just worked through them and now he's finishing his career with respect and grace.

MLB doesn't want to celebrate anything because of the steroid cloud. I think we should all be celebrating guys like the Big Hurt and the Kid who "look" like they did it the right way. It's not easy to hit that many HRs even if you're on steroids!

Yeah Griff was the man until injuries cut short what would have been the man who'd break all the home run records.... Jr. is one of the true greats and his career is overshadowed by what is the steriod era poor guy

I grew up watching Griffey in the Kingdome. He's the reason I play baseball. He's got the sweetest swing, or at least one of the sweetest swings, ever. He played the game off of his raw ability to just flat out play. I, personally, think Griffey Jr. is clean, and I do think ESPN is full of crap for not celebrating this milestone, which will be reached the right way.
