I'm not sure about this either, but Soriano does do things that don't show up in the stats. He puts tremendous pressure on the pitcher from the first pitch of the game. What made Ricky Henderson great wasn't necessarily the stolen bases, it was the power/speed combination. He'd either get on base and wreak havoc or give his team a 1-0 lead in the first with a HR. Giving your team a lead from the start is very important. You potentially rattle the opposing pitcher while giving your own pitcher a buffer. It also take a pitcher a batter or two to get into the game. Normally a mistake pitch isn't taken advantage of by a guy like Juan Pierre. With Soriano, it's a HR.

This has been one of the most discussed stories this offseason, Do the Cubs maximize Soriano's value by having him leadoff? The short and compact answer is No, Soriano's value is higher later in the lineup. But due to Alf's speed, decent track record, and large payday, he's been given the role that has plagued the Cubs for eons. He's nowhere near the prototypical leadoff man, a guy that puts balls on the ground, works counts, and gets on base at a great clip. Yet some analysts, for example Steve Stone, puts Soriano as the best leadoff man in the game today. For me, Alf doesn't cut it as one of the game's best but on the Cub's current roster, Soriano is the best candidate for the job.

Walkoff! to Victory March
For as many times as my neighbors furrow a brow to the "walkoff" chant that starts in the ninth inning of every New York home game down in the run column, nothing brings an easier smile than the "victory march" from door to door when the chant pays off. Down one run with two outs in the ninth and the bases loaded, Alex Rodriguez made the victory march even sweeter...

A Memorable Loss
In an otherwise unmemorable loss, New York fans had the pleasure of welcoming Andy Pettitte back to the Bronx on a memorable cold snowy night. As he walked onto the field amid a standing ovation, Pettitte looked to get his first win in pinstripes since the end of the 2003 season.
