The Mets put sore-shouldered John Maine on the 15-day disabled list yesterday and are preparing to replace him in the rotation with highly regarded minor-leaguer Jon Niese, according to a person familiar with the club's thinking.
The Mets will maneuver their rotation so that they don't need a fifth starter until Sept. 2 at Milwaukee. When they do, it will likely be Niese, a 21-year-old lefthander who has made six starts for Triple-A New Orleans and is 5-1 with a 3.65 ERA.
Niese, the Mets' seventh-round pick in the 2005 draft, would be making his major-league debut in the white-hot cauldron of a pennant race.
General manager Omar Minaya, in confirming that Niese was a candidate, said: "I'm very comfortable with our young prospects coming here and doing it the way Argenis Reyes has done it, the way [Daniel] Murphy has done it, the way [Nick] Evans has done it. I feel comfortable internally that we'll find a way to get it done."
Minaya also mentioned youngster Bobby Parnell, and veterans such as Brian Stokes and Nelson Figueroa have also been discussed in the team's internal discussions. But Niese, who pitched Sunday, should have one more minor-league tuneup on a pitch count before he makes his major-league debut against the Brewers.

Newsday reported today that John Maine was administered a cortisone shot prior to his start on Saturday. The result: pain, soreness and his least effective outing of his career.
Maine gets Cortisone Shot, but might not be enough........
With John Maine telling Newsday that he recieved a cortisone shot in order to make last Saturday's start against the Astros, there's a very real possiblity that tomorrow's side session could be the last time he climbs a mound this season.
Maine is going to need surgery anyway to shave down a bone spur in the back of his right shoulder, and if he is shut down early...
I'd go with Claudio Vargas
Now that it's official, John Maine is on the DL and the rest of his season is in jeopardy, the Mets need to find another starter. Brian Stokes can spot start and I know alot of people will be clamouring for Jon Niese or Bobby Parnell, but I'd go with a more conservative approach, Claudio Vargas. John Maine's spot has approximately five starts left which means the team...
Maine on the DL............
The Mets chances of holding off the hard-charging Phillies in the National League East just took a major hit when the team announced Monday it was placing starter John Maine on the 15-day disabled list as he continues to try to battle through a painful bone spur behind his right shoulder.
Luis Castillo, recovered from his hip flexor injury, took Maine's spot on the roster...
Maine to DL, Castillo activated
The New York Mets have placed John Maine on the disabled list. Maine is suffering from a bone spur in his right shoulder. Meanwhile, Luis Castillo has been activated and will start tonight against the Houston Astros.
MLB Punchlines:John Maine Headed to the DL
The Red Sox could be making their last trip to Yankee Stadium this week. The teams start a three game series tonight. (NY Times)Joba's road back continued with a 35 pitch bullpen session at the Stadium yesterday afternoon. (NY Post)Hopefully Mike Pelfrey has plenty more bullets in that right arm of his. The Mets need them more then ever after placing John Maine on the DL yesterday...
Getting Figgy with it...............
Everyone has speculated that Jon Niese would join the team to replace John Maine.
Word is that Nelson Figueroa is en route to Philadelphia today in addition to Robinson Cancel. No guarantee both get activated, I suppose. Aaron Heilman obviously is unavailable after tossing 60 pitches Tuesday. And Ramon Castro was headed to New York today for an MRI exam of his strained right...
Delgado and Pelfrey are a winning combo!, Beat Astros 9-1
Mike Pelfrey pitches a complete game, gives up 6 hits, 1 walk and strikes out 6....He continues to pitch well despite the bad news that John Maine went on the 15 day DL.
Carlos Delgado hit 2 HR's and drives in 6 RBI's.....................
Jose Reyes goes 3 for 4 with a Double and a Triple and 2 RBI's. He also stole his 41st base...

Don't forget the offense....
I said this after the Mets lost that Monday game to Pittsburgh, most would be happy with their current record and expect to loss a few. But the way the Mets have lost just leaves a bad taste in your mouth and worried about how long they will stay in contention. They Mets have lost two in a row and all kinds of warning signs have been going off during these defeats. John Maine had...
Delgado and Mets take back first place, win 6-3
Johan Santana was unable to hold it down by himself as he pitched 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs, while walking 3, and striking out 5. He got the no decision.........
Carlos Delgado has become "Bat Man" hitting two more HR's , driving in 3 runs.
Dan Murphy got the go ahead run in with a RBI double in the eighth.
The Bullpen was excellent starting with...
Vargas not an option looks like Niese
As I said last night I'd prefer to use Claudio Vargas if Maine is going to be replaced for multiple games. The offense and pen would know exactly what they were getting, something in the area of four runs over six innings, which is solid for a fifth starter. I missed it last night but Claudio Vargas is on the minor league disabled list and hasn't pitched since Aug. 3. With...
