Did Sidney Ponson pitch his last game as a Yankee last night? It's very possible. The Yankees have been lucky with Ponson thus far but last night's performance is a reminder of how much of a risk he really is. The winning streak eventually had to come to an end and the Yanks did take 2 of 3 in Boston, but it was still a game the Yanks needed to win. A win last night would have put the Yanks into a tie for the Wild Card with Boston and they would have gained a game on the Rays leaving them 2 out. But Ponson started in a big game spot. I'll excuse him for the fact that he was due to get hit around at some point. He has given the Bombers more than they could've imagined so I'm not upset with him. It does however raise some questions about Sir Sidney in big spots. The much rumored-to-be-Yankee Jarrod Washburn pitched 8 innings and gave up one run in his start yesterday. Does this accelerate the talks between the Mariners and Yanks? I don't know, but I would rather Washburn in the rotation than Ponson. The Yankees are willing to pick up the remaining 14 million on Washburn's contract but Seattle wants a top level prospect. I think Seattle is asking for a little too much and they should lower their asking price before Thursday's trade deadline so they can drop some salary and put that money towards other pieces needed for them to compete again. I wrote yesterday how the Royals and Yanks have discussed a Melky Cabrera for Brian Bannister trade. It looks like the Yanks aren't too serious about that unless the Washburn deal falls through. It also appears that the Florida Marlins have interest in Kei Igawa (oh my gosh!). They think he could be a dependable 4th or 5th starter in the National League. Good luck with that idea. Overall, this was a good week for the Yanks. They went 5-1, gained ground both in the divison and the Wild Card races. Let's hope the upcoming 7-game homestand proves to be just as productive.

Washburn to Yankees close to Done

MLBTR is reporting that Washburn to the Yankees may be done within 48 hours. Olney suggests that the move is a salary dump with $13-14MM still owed to Washburn ($3-4MM in '08, $10.35MM in '09). I hope they dump Kei Igawa to the Mariners.

Igawa Seizes The Moment

Kei Igawa might still prove to be a bad move in the never-ending chess game between the Yankees and the Red Sox but, at least for one day, he proved that he's capable of pitching in the Major Leagues:

Cashman's Dilemma

Yankees GM Brian Cashman's possible moral dilemma that could be stalling trade talks with the Seattle Mariners.

Royals 1 Game Behind Sox

The Royals continued to impress the faithful Friday night by beating the fourth place Chicago White Sox 8-1. Brian Bannister after a shaky start to the game settled down and returned to the form that already had him win four games this month. Well now he has five victories for the month. He finished ...

No Surgery, but Rest and Rehab for Alex Rodriguez

According to Pete Abraham, quoting Brian Cashman, Alex Rodríguez has a torn hip labrum and cyst, the cyst was drained, and the team is trying rest and rehab. Before you get all excited that Rodríguez won't be going under the knife, remember that the Yankees originally tried rest and rehab with Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui last year, and, well, we know how that went, as both went...

Doctoring Evil or Why I Have Zero Compassion For Yankees Fans

If the purpose of a great writer is to conjure up strong emotions from your audience then my fellow 'Barker jasoncarulli would be awarded the Pulitzer Prize tomorrow if it were up to me. After reading his article (http://yardbarker.com/mlb/articles/The_Evil_Has_Shifted/33388), all I could think of was that these four paragraphs penned by Mr. Carulli should be collected and distributed...

Yankees Show Interest In Rowand

Lisa Kennelly and Ed Price of the Star-Ledger reports that the Yankees would have interest in signing CF Aaron Rowand if the team finds a suitor for Melky Cabrera.

If Need Be, Jose Will Fight the Media

Cross Keith Hernandez off Jose Reyes' Christmas card list. The Mets shortstop and SNY Broadcaster almost got into blows on the team's charter flight to St. Louis over comments Hernandez made about Reyes on the air. During Sunday's 3-1 victory over the Yankees, Reyes slammed his glove to the ground after committing a throwing error, allowing Melky Cabrera to reach...

Daily News: Yanks: We have shot at Johan Santana

Steinbrenner would not divulge the Yanks’ offer, but multiple reports have pegged it as Hughes, outfielder Melky Cabrera, pitching prospect Jeff Marquez and another prospect. Santana, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, probably would require a huge extension with his potential new team to waive ...

Yankees Willing to Deal Hughes for Santana…

Well, the latest news in the Santana derby is that the Yankees are willing to dangle Hughes in order to get the Minnesota lefty. A pivotal sticking point in the Yankees' trade talks with Minnesota about Johan Santana is the question of whether New York will include talented right-hander Phil Hughes in their offer. And, within the internal discussions...

Cabrera, Duncan have suspensions reduced by MLB

Melky Cabrera and Shelley Duncan both had their suspensions reduced by one game Friday by Major League Baseball in a deal that will allow the New York Yankees to play their entire weekend series against Tampa Bay just one player short instead of two. Cabrera and Duncan both agreed to drop their appea...

Spring Training Stats Lie

Kei Igawa has gotten off to a hot start this spring and it has gotten the attention of a few fans some of which are even thinking he might contribute to the Yankees this season. After all, he?s pitched 8 dominant innings this spring while surrendering zero runs, just 3 hits, and no walks. He?s also [...]

Early returns not great for Yankees

I praised Brian Cashman throughout the off-season for all the moves he made. I was, and still am, among those who liked the trades of Gary Sheffield, Randy Johnson and Jaret Wright -- each of which brought back young pitching talent. I was even OK with the signing of Kei Igawa. Right now, however, things aren't working out quite the way Cashman had planned.

Gardner & Chamberlain: Too Early To Decide

Joba Chamberlain's first and second start this Spring caused a lot of worry. His velocity was down and he was hit hard. With the strong outing he had last night, he put a lot of those fears to rest. His pitches topped out at 98 MPH. He threw 29 pitches (20 for strikes), striking out three and ...
