Three Yankee pitchers took small, but significant steps on their way back to good health on Tuesday. Phil Hughes (broken rib) and Carl Pavano (reconstructive elbow surgery) made their first rehab starts since their respective injuries, while Chien-Ming Wang had the cast removed from his right foot. The 22-year-old Hughes allowed two hits and a walk in three shutout innings for Class A Charleston, while Pavano allowed a hit and a walk in two scoreless innings. Joe Girardi said that Hughes has the best chance of the three recovering pitchers to make an impact for New York this season, though Wang could make a push to be ready in late September and for the playoffs. A free agent at the end of the season, Pavano would certainly have motivation to return before the year is over, perhaps riding in on his white horse Roger Clemens-style to help boost the Yanks into the postseason and saving a little face after wasting four years and $40 million. But if I'm the Yankees, I don't risk pitching a guy who has only thrown 11 innings in the big leagues over the past two seasons, all coming in 2007. So if you're the Yankees, what do you do? Do you go the optimistic route and hope that Sidney Ponson and Darrell Rasner can hold down the fort until Hughes and/or Wang return? Or do you pick up some insurance in the form of a trade, shelling out for Jarrod Washburn or another pitcher? The truth is, there's no guarantee that their injured pitchers will return this year. And even if they do, how effective will they be? The bet here is that the Yankees make a trade, if not by July 31 then before the waiver deadline passes.

  • maaaan they better get healthy and get back and help the yanks... they are very much dookie right now. If hughes is what he is hyped to be then yanks will be fine, but it just seems like everytime the yanks get a good player from elsewhere they come to the yanks and they dont live up to it, they are always on the decline of their career..

You Know Where You Can Put Your Shift, A**hole?

Hilarious find by Sports Crack today. Jason Giambi was batting in the bottom of the sixth inning against the O's last night when Brian Roberts decided to change up the standard shift on the lefty. Instead of standing in the deep infield and moving toward first, B-Rob decided to play almost all the way in the outfield (ala a short fielder in Softball). It almost worked too...

See the new Yankee Stadium

The new Yankee stadium looks almost complete in this view of the new and old stadiums from the direcTV. There are 55 photos in all different angles and stages of construction. Pretty sharp. But, it will still be a sad day in baseball history to see the old Yankee Stadium taken down.

yankees never change

yanks should of picked up pitching... joba cant get it done all alone, i still dont trust mussina, or pettite, they need to just stop trying to pick up 90s all stars, it pisses me off! do they not like young talent? i dont look at stats much but im pretty sure they are probably dead last in steals. i keep hearing how they have a nice farm system, but i guess we will never find out...

The House That Ruth Built

Yankee Stadium or "the house that Ruth built" is a baseball and sports icon. Many great games and events have been played on that hallowed ground. I recently had the opportunity to watch the Yankees play the Twins at the fabled Yankee Stadium before it reaches its demise and gets torn down after this season. A friend and I drove to the Bronx and watched the Yankees come...

Griffey to the Chisox Is a Beautiful Thing

It looks like my October rooting options might not be limited to whoever is playing the Red Sox and/or Yankees. Griffey, after being traded to the White Sox today, will get at least one more chance at a ring — an opportunity he hasn't had since leading the M's to the playoffs 11 years ago. [...]

Pudge Traded to Yankees

I don't have a link yet, but i just saw this on ESPNEWS. According to Buster Olney, the Yankees have traded Kyle Farnsworth to the Tigers for Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. I like this trade for the Yankees. Farnsworth is average at best, and the Yankees have guys in the minors who could easily replace him. Pudge has an OPS+ of 101 this year, so he's about a league average...

LaTroy Hawkins Traded

Recently DFA'd LaTroy Hawkins has been traded to the Houston Astros for Matt Cusick. Cusick is a 22 year old second baseman currently in A-ball. I don't know what level he will play at for the Yankees, but here is some background info on him: He was a tenth-round pick out USC in 2007. While at USC, he had an OPS over .800 all three years he played there, including a .970...
