Yankees sign A.J. Burnett for five years, $82.5MM.
Analysis: Mullet, Szymborski, Law.
CHONE projection: 167IP, 16HR, 63BB, 164K, 3.88 ERA, 39 RAR.

CHONE's five-year forecast has Burnett's total value over the length of the contract at $74.1MM. For comparison, Lowe's next five are valued at $70.8MM, and his next three are $44.5MM. 3/36 -- the Mets' current offer -- looks two be the lower bound for what he'll get, but even if that gets bumped all the way up to $15MM/year over three years, he'll be a better value than Burnett. The Yankees probably would've been better off waiting until after the holidays to make a big splash with a SP; they're not the only team that would've benefited by being more patient, of course.

How would you rate the Yankees' signing of A.J. Burnett?

Hal Has Finally Become a True Steinbrenner

Hank has always been tagged as the Steinbrenner apple that didn't fall far from George's tree. He has been portrayed and labeled as the more cutthroat and volatile of the sons. This of course is true, but ignores that Hank in fact knows nothing about running a sports franchise. He has little if anything to do with the actual decision-making process of the New York Yankees...

1869 Baseball card found

An antique collector found a baseball card from 1869 while rummaging through a box of antiques. The 70-year-old woman wanted to sell it on Ebay for $10--the card is going to go for six figures easy. Can you imagine hitting that kind of jackpot? (Oh she did that too! Read on.)With my luck, I'd ...

Would the Mets Dare Sign the Boras Trio?

Since Scott Boras?s meeting with Omar Minaya earlier this week, the speculation is for how long/how much Derek Lowe will cost. All signs point to a Lowe/Mets union in the near future. However, the dreamer could speculate about their meeting leading to something greater: Signing of Derek Lowe, Oliver Perez, and Manny Ramirez. As of today [...]

Walking Away From Perez Would Be Criminal

Ken Rosenthal?s report, on last night?s Mets Hot Stove, about Oliver Perez stated that he ?couldn?t find a GM who is interested in Perez, outside of Omar Minaya?. This puts the Mets in a position where it almost is criminal in letting Perez walk. Despite reports that America?s most insignificant team (Atlanta) has their sights set [...]

Midday: Mets making pitches to solidify rotation

According to reports, the Mets are close, or have possibly made, offers to two pitchers: Righthander Tim Redding and lefthander Randy Wolf. Meanwhile, GM Omar Minaya continues to meet with Scott Boras about Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez. Beerleaguer: Redding (10-11, 4.95 ERA, 89 ERA+) completely faded in the second half of ’08 and I’m beginning to think the former reclamation project...

The Mets pursuing Garcia....

The more I think of it, the more I think the one thing the Tim Redding signing signifies is an end to the Pedro era. I know Pedro said he would take a discount to return to the Mets but how much of a discount, it's reported that he turned down a deal for 8MM a year. In this market the Mets can ...

As mentioned in December, I was selected to be a guest writer Peter Abraham?s Blog at the Journal News. You can go there and read it yourself, but I discussed our next ?what if? Sim Series between the 1986 Mets and 1996 Yankees. Hope you enjoy, and thank you Pete for having us contribute to [...]

Phillies Rumors: Nomah?

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has a couple tidbits on the Phillies The Phillies are showing interest in both Nomar Garciaparra and Gabe Kapler as right handed bats off the bench. I would prefer Nomar since he is a better hitter (only 11K in 163 ABs last year) , can play the infield, ?and ...

Monday Is Rickey Henderson Day (Finally)

Rickey Henderson has finally stayed away from the game long enough to be on the Hall Of Fame Ballot. You may remember that he kept coming out of retirement, pushing his Hall Of Fame election back in the process. On Monday he'll get voted into Cooperstown and, like so many others, I simply ...

Get To Know a Prospect: Reese Havens

In the 2008 Baseball Draft, the Mets selected Reese Havens, a shortstop/infielder out of the University of South Carolina. Despite his struggles this past season with Brooklyn, mainly due to injuries, he is receiving praise and hype. Baseball America named him number 8 on the Mets top 2009 Prospect List. He only played in 23 games this season, and in 85 AB he had 13 R, 21 H, 6 2B...
