Found July 25, 2008 on Hot Stove New York: Yardbarker Blogger Network
While most Yankees fans are clamoring for a left fielder or another starting pitcher as the July 31 trade deadline looms, one overlooked position seems to be that of catcher. It appears Jorge Posada is lost for the season, and it could be that he is no longer able to play as an everyday backstop again. In the meantime, Jose Molina has filled in as the regular catcher, with very mediocre results. While he is a decent defensive player, his .220 batting average, .260 on-base percentage and .300 slugging percentage are laughable. You'll take that out of a back-up catcher one game per week, maybe. Jose's brother, Bengie Molina, on the other hand is a whole different story. Sure, the Giants catcher may be the slowest baseball player since Cecil Fielder, but beyond that, it's hard to find something he doesn't do well. This guy is simply a pro's pro. He defends well, rarely letting balls get by him, and he is second in the National League when it comes to throwing out would-be base stealers, having gunned down 34.5 percent this season. And while handling pitching staffs is sometimes an overrated quality, he is one of the best. But fielding aside, Molina is always a threat at the plate with men on base. He certainly rivals Posada when it comes to catchers hitting in the clutch, and he's been doing so ever since his Angels days, when he actually protected Vladimir Guerrero for a time. On a young San Francisco Giants team, Bengie is the unquestioned leader. On the Yankees, he would be a welcome veteran who could add some pop to the lineup and provide a reliable presence behind the plate. And being that he's under contract through 2009, he might make Posada's possible transition to 1B/DH a little smoother. The only question is: Do the Giants let him go? While San Francisco drafted Florida State phenom Buster Posey with the fifth pick in this year's amateur draft, the young catcher is likely a couple years away from The Show. GM Brian Sabean won't let him go for nothing. New York will need to dangle a couple of solid prospects, certainly making a better offer than what the Giants got from the Brewers for the pinch-hitter deluxe Ray Durham. So let the Molina brothers unite in The Bronx. It could make for a joyous reunion.

Yankees make their move

Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, two of the biggest remaining prizes in the baseball trade market, are New York Yankees. I guess that answers the question of whether or not the surging the Yankees would go all in to try and make the playoffs in Yankee Stadium's final season. Chalk up a win for GM Brian Cashman [...]

Sandlot Baseball Becoming Extinct?

The Globe and Mail has a rare baseball feature on Sandlot baseball, a slice of American life enjoyed for decades by boys from coast to coast that appears on the verge of extinction.

Protect Your Rep: The A-Rod Lesson

A-Rod was discussed earlier today, so let's keep the trend going. Luckily, or unluckily, most agents will never deal with an issue like that which Alex Rodriguez is currently wrapped in. Lies, deceit, and public infidelity. It is not something that the average man doesn't deal with on a daily basis, but fans do not view one of the world's most highly paid and skilled...

Oh Boy, the Yankees are Coming

The second half is well upon us and it seems that the New York Yankees are looking to crash the party atop the AL East. After a mediocre first half of baseball, the Bronx Bombers have won seven-straight ball games, trailing the East leading Rays by just 3 games heading into the second game of a three-game weekend series with the Boston Red Sox. It seems as if the Yankees are preparing...

Nady Trade Reconfigured

According to Pete Abe, the last two players in the trade for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte are not Phil Coke and George Kontos, but Jeff Karstens and Dan McCutchen. I don't like this trade as much anymore, but I still like it a lot. McCutchen will end up being better than Coke and Kontos, but Karstens is basically worthless.

Moose, Yankees rolling along

How is Mike Mussina doing this? At 39, a year removed from pitching like a washed-up old man headed for the end of his career, Mussina is pitching as well or better than anyone in the American League, and as well as he ever has. Mussina is now 13-6 after 8 shutout innings in a 5-1 victory [...]

Karstens and McCutchen In Nady Deal

Last night's deal which sent Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from Pittsburgh to the Yankees was incorrectly reported. Jose Tabata is still the centerpiece along with Ross Ohlendorf, but Jeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen have become Pirates as well. The reports made the rounds before the Yankees announced anything official. Phil Coke, who was originally reported as being part...

Pavano to toss up gopher balls

New York Yankees pitc… uh, injury riddled Carl Pavano is set to appear in a big league stadium tomorrow night. Though instead of trying to get big league hitters out he'll be serving up batting practice fast balls but when you consider that the Yankees have gotten just 19 starts over the four year $39.95 million dollar contract he signed with the team prior to 2005 anything...

Robinson Cano For Derek Lowe And Matt Kemp?

Just the title of this post alone should be enough to drive any Dodger fan insane, but i'll quickly touch on the rumor anyway. MLB Trade Rumors has the details: "Dodgers have an interest in Robinson Cano and might be willing to deal Derek Lowe and outfielder Matt Kemp, but the Yankees aren't inclined to part with the red-hot second baseman unless there is a front...

Madonna masks at Fenway tonight

This trend doesn't seem to be going away. SoxandDawgs has unveiled the Madonna mask just in time for tonights game at Fenway. Will Alex Rodriguez actually be phased by it? I highly doubt it. But it will be fun nonetheless.

No more "Yankees Suck" chants

What would a Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park be without a "Yankees Suck" chant? If Kevin Cullen of the Boston Globe had his way, we would find out.

Not surprisingly, the Yankees lead the majors in average salary paid at $6.7 million. The Twins are on the low end at $2.48 million.

Torii Hunter Signs With The Angels!

It looks like the Angels have a newly acquired big ticket item on their squad. I didn't expect this, but Los Angeles has signed center-fielder Torii Hunter. The move gives the Angels not only their big bat and protection for Vladmir Guerrero, but also a defensive whiz in centerfield. Outfielder Torii Hunter and the Los Angeles Angels reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday...

Wow, somebody's optimistic about 2008 SF Giants

They DO have a lot of young talent. But if the final year of Dave Roberts' awful 3-year $18 Million contract prevents exciting young speedsters like Fred Lewis and Rajai Davis from seeing action in the outfield (same goes with Ray Durham keeping Eugenio Velez on the bench), Giants fans will be very disappointed. What about just buying out the contracts of Roberts and Durham...
