After suffering a bullpen phone malfunction in Game Five, the St. Louis Cardinals fell to the Texas Rangers 4-2.  If you haven’t been on another planet then you know the Rangers are ahead in the World Series 3-2.  More than a lot must go right in order for the Cardinals to come back and tie/win the World Series.

The Red Birds will be throwing Jaime Garcia who is 0-2 in the 2011 post season with a 3.97 ERA.  Clearly Garcia will need to step up his game, he NEEDS a “Robert Horry Mindset” going into game Six. The Rangers have Colby Lewis starting on the bump who is 1-1 and has a 2.97 ERA with a deep bullpen behind him.  Another key factor in this crucial Game Six is the consistency of St. Louis’s offense.  Albert Pujols set a MLB record by slugging three home runs in Game Four, but besides that he hasn’t produced much run support . Pujols is only hitting .278 in the series.  What’s not helping Pujols’s case, is Matt Holliday’s struggles at the dish.  With the Rangers game plan being putting Pujols on base whenever the opportunity is right, Holliday becomes the main target.  He is only hitting .167 with one extra base hit and zero RBI’s, leading to the Ranger’s manager Ron Washington to choose to not pitch to Albert “The Machine” Pujols.

If the Cardinals play stronger defense, are less streaky at the plate, and hope that they get a solid start from Jaime Garcia then they can win.  On the up side the rest of the World Series will be played in St. Louis, allowing the Cardinals to feed off of their fans and get some momentum. Every non-biased fan wants this to go into 7, so let’s hope the Cardinals execute.

The Best Game 6 Offensive Performances of All-Time

Last Saturday night, Albert Pujols treated us to an unparalleled display of power.  His 5-for-6 performance, which included three home runs, six RBI, and 14 total bases, produced a RE24 of 5.808, the highest in World Series history. To help pass the time until tomorrow night’s game, I thought that it would be interesting to examine the best Game Six offensive performances in World...

Albert’s Call

Albert Pujols did call the hit and run play in the seventh. Cards manager Tony La Russa opened his press conference today by defending Albert Pujols, who called for a failed hit-and-run on his own in the seventh inning of the team’s 4-2 loss in Game 5. “That player gets a lot of leeway and ability to be involved based on how he reads what’s going on. Albert has...

Defending Intentional Walks

I am no fan of the intentional walk. Not only is it usually poor strategy (there are very few situations when it is even a good play to give Albert Pujols a free pass), but I also tend to agree with those who think that the intentional walk is contrary to the “spirit of the game.” There are some interesting suggestions out there on how it might be “banned”...

La Russa has long molded Cardinals in his image

Albert Pujols' pending free-agency isn't the only franchise-changing negotiation awaiting the St. Louis Cardinals once the World Series concludes. Manager Tony La Russa is also on the docket regarding a 17th year on the Cardinals' bench. He and the organization hold a mutual option for next season on a deal signed a little more than a year ago.

World Series Game 6 Postponed

The weather might be the MVP of the 2011 baseball playoffs. It seems like every series has been affected by rain — and the World Series is no different. Baseball was forced to postpone Game 6 and play it on Thursday night. If the Texas Rangers win on Thursday, they will be the World Series champions. If the St. Louis Cardinals win Game 6 and force a Game 7, that contest will...
