TEAMS: Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals
This morning, I read an article in the Chicago Sun-Times that quoted deposed Cubs skipper Mike Quade on the major challenge in his former job. Despite having managed 17 years in the minors, he was still not completely prepared for one element of his Major League assignment – dealing with the media multiple times each and every day all season long.
You can read the details, but suffice it to say that Quade is painted as the anti-Robin Ventura and Mike Matheny. Both the new skippers of the White Sox and Cardinals have yet to manage a game at any level professionally. Though each is a former long-time Major League player, their media engagement level will now increase exponentially.
I have to wonder how Matheny will evolve in this area. By all indications, including my first up-close opportunity with him in his new role during the recent Winter Warm-Up, the former catcher is open and at-ease with the scribes. A man of faith, Matheny appears balanced with his priorities seemingly where...

Mike Quade Irked By Dale Sveum’s Comments About 2011 Cubs
You’d be pretty hard-pressed to find a Cubs fan that was too disappointed when Mike Quade was fired this past fall.
Theo Epstein decided not to retain him and brought in Dale Sveum, one of the more coveted names out on the managerial market, to replace him.
Quade didn’t have too much to work with in 2011, so obviously not all the blame falls on him, but between his questionable...
Cubs sign Cuban Pitcher Gerardo Concepcion
According to Jorge Ebro and Enrique Rojas, Cuban defector Gerardo Concepcion has agreed to a $7 million deal with the Cubs.
Ben Badler of Baseball America (paysite) has the following scouting report on the 19 year old lefty:
Concepcion, 19, was the rookie of the year in Cuba in 2010-11, when he posted a 3.36 ERA in 101 2/3 innings pitching for the Industriales. While his ERA...
Breaking Down The Cubs’ Signing Of Gerardo Concepcion
With the market for Cuban players especially fruitful this winter, it’s been pretty clear that the Cubs had planned to be heavy players in at least a few of the players set to make the jump to the U.S.

Where Should Starlin Castro Hit In Cubs’ Batting Order?
As unbearable as it may have been to watch the Cubs at times last season, Starlin Castro provided the one bright spot with his breakout season.
Heading into 2012, he’s seen as a building block of these revamped Cubs and the youth movement taking place on the North Side this season.
Though we’ve barely crept into February, the question over where Starlin will hit in Dale...
Mike Quade takes issue with Dale Sveum’s evaluation of Cubs’ effort
When Dale Sveum was hired as Mike Quade’s replacement to manage the Cubs, he said the Cubs would be held to a higher standard. He suggested Quade’s Cubs were lackadaisical at times. “When you lose that many games, there are obviously problems,’’ Sveum said. “Losing isn’t OK. Not running a ball out isn’t OK. It’s unacceptable, and that has to be communicated.’’...
