This is the third part in this series, and thus far the Indians have been strongly improved over two positions.  The first two positions I looked at were first base and second base, so it's time to continue across the diamond in counter-clockwise fashion and look at the shortstop position. This is the only position which has stayed consistent over the last few years for the Indians.  Asdrubal Cabrera is the only Indians hitter to be the opening day starter for this team the last three seasons. Slash Lines 2011 - Asdrubal Cabrera  .293/.347/.489 393 PA2012 - Asdrubal Cabrera  .286/.364/.467 343 PA2013 - Asdrubal Cabrera  .259/.295/.375 300 PA The drop by Asdrubal this season is frightening as he has taken a major tumble in every stat. I know he was hurt, but remember how he reported to camp in the best shape of his life; well his performance has not showed this at all. I am most scared by the drop in OBP where he took such strides in it last year but it is down 70 points this yea...

Josh Tomlin Makes Season Debut In Rehab Outing

It’s been quite a while since we saw Josh Tomlin on the mound. On Friday night, however, the right-hander made his season debut following Tommy John surgery less than one year ago. Per his own Twitter account as well as Tony Lastoria of IBI, Tomlin pitched a scoreless inning in the Arizona Fall League. Nice to see @jtomlin43 out on the hill tonight for the first time in a rehab...

Lindor-Mania takes over Canal Park in Aeros Win

Akron, OH – By the third time Francisco Lindor walked up to the plate Thursday night at Canal Park, the Akron faithful began to chant, "Fran-cis-co." The highly-touted Indians prospect put on a show and gave everyone a look into the type of hitter he can be, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three runs batted in to lead the Aeros to a 5-1 win over the Richmond...

Second Thoughts Game #100: Indians 3, Mariners 4

Return of the Mac The long-anticipated return of Zach McAllister to the Indians rotation is finally here and while his first start wasn’t all that great, we’ll still take it considering the circumstances. The right-hander pitched five innings allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and had to work around miscues by his defense as well as his own rustiness...

Around The Farm: July 25, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.  Francisco Lindor (SS, Akron): 3-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SO Well, it took 10 games, but Lindor finally struck out at the Double-A level. He added a double and home run last...

Raburn lifts Indians over Rangers in 11-8 walk-off

CLEVELAND -- After twice contemplating a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Raburn hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the 11th inning off Jason Frasor, giving the Cleveland Indians a 11-8 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. After shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and catcher Carlos Santana opened the inning with back-to-back singles off Frasor (0-2, 3.26), Raburn squared to bunt on two pitches...

Sailing with the Clippers: 7/18/13 to 7/24/13

Pitching has been the name of the game for the Clippers as the second-half of their season has gotten off to a promising 4-3 start. They could easily be 7-0 as their losses came by three runs or less (two of them were by a one-run deficit). With a limited offense, the pitching staff is key and if they keep the runs down, Columbus has a shot of making a late-season push for the playoffs...

The Reinvention of Carlos Santana

Regular readers to Burning River Baseball know that I have always been bearish on Carlos Santana. Whether it was missing a week of games last season due to getting hit in the catcher's mask by a line drive or lazy attempts to block balls in the dirt, I have always felt as if he has not lived up to his "top prospect" status. This may be relying too much on subjective...

Indians 10 Mariners 1: Kazmir’s dominant run continues as offense awakens

We have been waiting for the offense to wake up and they finally did. The hot and cold streaks are no doubt frustrating. It is games like this one where the Wahoos scored 10 runs on 13 hits, where you scratch your head at how they can be so anemic at times. A day after a second straight blunder-filled one run loss, the angry Indians took their frustrations out on Mariners left-hander...

Minor League Baseball Team Holding Ridiculous ‘Sharknado Night’ Promotion

The Cleveland Indians’ Class-A affiliate, Lake Count Captains are jumping on the latest flop of a TV show and buzz-worthy on Twitter TV show’s bandwagon for a new promotion, and you can’t help but laugh. The team will be holding a Sharknado promotion on Aug. 15th and it will have everything if their ridiculous press release is any indication. (Eastlake, OH) – The Lake County...

Pasquale pitches Mudcats to 7-2 series win

WINSTON-SALEM - The Carolina Mudcats jumped out in front early and never looked back, defeating the Winston Salem Dash 7-2 Friday night.  The win continued Carolina’s season-high win streak to six games.  Carolina (19-14, 41-62) moved to a season-high five games over .500 for the second half. The win clinched a series win in Winston-Salem for Carolina.  The series win was the...

Raburn's home run gives Indians extra-inning victory

CLEVELAND -- A downer turned into a triumph because a bunt turned into a swing. And that swing in the bottom of the 11th inning Friday night turned into a Ryan Raburn three-run home run that gave the Indians an 11-8 win over the Texas Rangers. This one ended gleeful. But it could have been glum as the Indians went to extra innings after squandering a 7-1 lead -- they hadnt blown a...

Indians left stunned again in Seattle, lose 4-3

SEATTLE—It was just last season that Tribe starter Zach McAllister led the league in unearned runs. Making his first start since June 2, the right-hander received no help defensively again Tuesday night. Three more errors and lack run support proved more than a recipe for disaster, as the Indians fell one run short to the Seattle Mariners for the second straight night, 4-3. Offensively...

Indians 11, Rangers 8(11)

Ryan Raburn twice faked a bunt. There was nothing phony about his next swing. Raburn hit a three-run homer in the 11th inning off Jason Frasor, giving the Cleveland Indians a wild and sloppy 11-8 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. After Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana singled off Frasor (0-2), Raburn squared to bunt on two pitches and possibly drop a sacrifice before...

Rangers' comeback falls short in extra-inning loss to Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Ryan Raburn's three-run homer in the 11th inning off Jason Frasor gave the Cleveland Indians a wild and sloppy 11-8 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. After Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana singled off Frasor (0-2), Raburn pulled a 2-1 pitch onto the home-run porch in left to rescue the Indians, who blew a 7-1 lead and nearly lost to a Texas team...
