The Pirates and Braves go at it at 12:10 this afternoon, with the Pirates looking to avoid their first sweep since their ugly trip to Los Angeles back at the beginning of April. The Pirates are not playing well right now; they've lost two in a row and four of their last five. It's worth noting, though, that you don't have to pull your focus back that far to put things in a better perspective. If the Pirates can win today, they'll still go 5-5 against the Tigers, Reds, and Braves over their last ten games. I think we all would've taken that ten days ago. Either way, the Pirates will have at least 35 wins in their first 60 games, with two off-days sandwiched around a weekend at Wrigley directly ahead.  That being said: I think we'll all feel better about the Pirates with a win this afternoon. Wandy Rodriguez takes the mound for the Pirates against Julio Teheran. Teheran's been much-improved since the last time the Pirates saw him, but I think there'...

Three Cuts: Teheran, Gattis help Braves sweep Bucs

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 5-0 victory over the Pirates (35-25), clinching a midweek series sweep at Turner Field. 1. Julio Teheran was a harmless Brandon Inge single from baseball immortality (for one day, at least) As a general rule, I don't publicly acknowledge no-hitters or the possibility of a no-no until one out in the eighth inning...

Wandy Rodriguez has forearm tightness

Wandy Rodriguez left his start Wednesday in the first inning after facing just four batters, complaining of tightness in his forearm. Rodriguez has 6 wins and a 3.59 ERA on the season. Charlie Morton could be removed from his rehab assignment to fill Rodriguez’s rotation spot should he need to miss starts. This could potentially be a big blow for the Pirates chances of remaining...

Julio Teheran: From Prospect Fatigue to Potential Ace?

Yesterday, two former Braves prospects took no-hit bids into later innings. One was was Jason Marquis, a 34-year old veteran getting by largely thanks to the roomy confines of Petco Park. The other was 22-year old Julio Teheran, and his gem seemed to herald his arrival as the real deal. Marquis was a supplemental first rounder in 1996. (He was the 35th overall pick, 34 picks behind...

All of Your Super Two/Arbitration Clock Questions Answered

When will Gerrit Cole pass the Super Two cutoff? I’ve been getting Super Two and arbitration clock questions all day, probably because of the Wandy Rodriguez injury and the chance that Gerrit Cole could come up soon. Rather than answering these over and over, I’m going to go over the deadlines here. Then I can just send people here when I keep getting the questions over and over...

Braves sweep Pirates with near no-no, head to L.A.

As the Pirates arrived at Turner Field for a 3-game set, all the talk was about how good the Pirates are in 2013. Yes, they have a superb starting rotation. Yes, they have the best bullpen in baseball at the moment. Yes, they have great young superstars in the making with Starling Marte, Garrett Jones and all-star Andrew McCutchen. But what they don’t have is that grit and ability...
