PLAYERS: Aaron Westlake
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
Aaron Westlake, the Detroit Tigers’ 22nd round pick in 2010 out of Vanderbilt, has not had many opportunities to prove himself thus far in spring training. He took advantage of one of his few chances on Sunday, though, blasting a home run in Detroit’s loss to the Braves. Your browser does not support iframes. Westlake hit .249 with nine home runs and 69 RBI for Class A West Michigan last season, his second in the Tigers’ minor-league system. The Tigers took a bit of a scattered roster to take on Atlanta at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex, bringing up Westlake from minor-league camp for the trip. His homer was his lone hit in three at-bats — his only three at-bats with the Tigers in spring training.

Detroit Tigers rumors: Porcello peaking interest

The Detroit Tigers and Rick Porcello trade rumors are likely to crank into overdrive in the coming weeks. It’s kind of becoming the Tigers equivalent of what the Diamondbacks experienced with Justin Upton. The elongated nature of Upton’s trade talks probably won’t replicate in Detroit but Porcello’s name has been a hot topic ever since the Tigers overpaid for the return of...

Verlander talks money, gay rights, first MLB hit

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander sat down with CNN's Carol Costello to talk money, gay rights and more. Verlander was asked about the comments he made about the $200 million contract, his response: "They got taken out of

Detroit Tigers: who should close?

The closing situation for the Detroit Tigers has become an absolute mess in the span of just one week. Rewind 7 days ago and Bruce Rondon was basically still the guy. Today, things are clouded. How cloudy you ask? So dense that even Carlos Marmol’s name has popped up in trade rumors. My fingers could barely type that. If Carlos Marmol is acquired by the Tigers then I think we...

30 Prospects in 30 Days: Nick Castellanos – 3B/OF – Detroit Tigers

Nick Castellanos is blocked by Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. Can he hit enough to populate right field for the Tigers for years to come? Profile Nick Castellanos was drafted in the 1st round (sandwich pick – #44 overall) in the 2010 MLB draft out of Archbishop McCarthy HS in Southwest Ranches, FL. He signed for $3.45M. The 21 year old right hander hitter stands 6’ 4”...

Tigers' Villarreal glad family safe after robbery

Brayan Villarreal was sitting at a Red Lobster restaurant when he was texted by his mother that there was danger at his home in Venezuela. Villarreal was stunned to find out that his father, mother, and 14-year-old brother had been robbed at gunpoint in their own home and held captive last Friday. None of them were harmed, but his father and brother were tied up. Villarreal was...

The World Baseball Classic needs to take a page from Dave Chappelle and Baseketball

Is there a way to add legitimate interest to the World Baseball Classic? It’s hard to imagine. The attempt to wedge this Olympic-styled, world-captivating pipedream event into a tiny timeframe is laughable, especially considering that, at this time of the year, all baseball fans care about is whether their team’s top prospect successfully completed the bunting drill or whether...

Various Tigers rumors (Porcello, potential closers, etc.)

According to ESPNNewYork.com’s Adam Rubin, Rangers scouts were on-hand for Rick Porcello’s four innings of shutout ball Monday and inquired what it would take to land him.  The Rangers are looking to sure up their fifth starter spot.  With Porcello and Drew Smyly performing well thus far in camp, it would appear that one of them (more likely Porcello) will be dealt before Opening...

The Detroit Tigers are desperate for a closer and have only themselves to blame

If rumors are to be believed, and really why wouldn't we believe them, the Detroit Tigers are getting some seriously cold feet about rookie reliever Bruce Rondon serving as their closer in 2013. As a result, CBS Sports is reporting that the Tigers have begun scouring the market for a more proven option to assume the closer role. That's a pretty untenable position for a contender...

Tigers' Hunter learned to lead

LAKELAND, Fla. -- How does a leader become one? They do so by admiring other leaders and aspiring to pick up their torch. In Torii Hunters case, those leaders ranged from his mother, Shirley, to his Minnesota Twins teammate, Kirby Puckett, and a revered opponent, Ken Griffey, Jr. And at every turn, ever since he was a young boy attending the Indiana Street Baptist Church in...

Bruce Rondon’s Spring Struggles Having Ripple Effects for Marmol, Valverde

After Jose Valverde’s postseason implosion, the Detroit Tigers looked to move on and hoped young rookie, Bruce Rondon, would run away with the closer’s gig in Spring Training. Much like a young Craig Kimbrel, Rondon has great stuff needing only to harness his control. Unfortunately, he has been unable to find the reigns and has five walks in just 3.2 spring innings. He’s also...
