A’s infielder Adam Roales, one of the team’s standouts during spring training thus far, was placed on the disable list with a sprained left intercostal (some rib muscle).
With Rosales beginning the season on the DL, it easier to see what shape the opening day roster is beginning to take, particularly in the middle infield, which has been the big mystery all camp.
According to the Chronicle’s John Shea, expect to see newcomer Jed Lowrie, not Hiro Nakajima, as the starting shortstop at least for the beginning of the season while over at second base, Eric Sogard and Scott Sizemore are likely to platoon.
Rosales was in the thick of the hotly contested race to be the team’s starting second baseman all spring, along with Sogard, Sizemore and Jemile Weeks. Weeks was sent down to Triple-A over the weekend after his hot start to the spring fizzled out after an injury-induced absence, leaving the other three to duke it out over the final week for one roster spot (two if Nakajima is sent down...
