Found August 30, 2013 on Padres Public:
When my family moved from Oceanside to Tucson in 1991 the Diamondbacks were years away from existing and for a displaced Padres fan I was 8 hours away from professional baseball. Except for the Tucson Toros, at the time the affiliates of the Houston Astros. They played their games at Hi Corbett Field (famously used in the beginning of “Major League”) which is centrally located in Tucson. The games were cheap, they were fun, and they became a big part of growing up in Tucson. Little League nights, hoping someone would hit the bull in right field (that’s right Durham, you guys aren’t the only one) and wondering if the kid would beat Tuffy in the race to home plate. (Fun Fact: Matt Vasgersian was a Toro broadcaster in 1996) Mike Feder, GM of the Tucson Padres Minor League baseball played it’s final game in Tucson last night. It’s final game ever? Mike Feder, the GM of the Tucson Padres and previously of the Tucson Toros, hopes not. In an interview with the Arizona Daily Star he said “I...

Venable, Guzman bats power Padres to 5-1 win over D-Backs

Robbie Erlin’s fifth major league start Wednesday night was also part of an audition. Recalled from Triple-A Tucson and added to the Padres rotation after Edinson Volquez was jettisoned last weekend Erlin is pitching for his future as well as the present. Both looked pretty good Wednesday night as Erlin held the Diamondbacks to one run on six hits over six innings as the Padres...

Edinson Volquez’s Place in Padres History

The Edinson Volquez era finally ended on Tuesday, when the Padres released the erratic right-hander three days after designating him for assignment. A lot went wrong during his nearly two seasons in San Diego after coming over from the Reds as part of the package for Mat Latos. Pitching coach Darren Balsley noted that Volquez overthrew in games, which “led to mechanical breakdowns...

Stults, Bass tagged as Padres lose to Dodgers 9-2

The San Diego Padres were unable to contain the Los Angeles Dodgers' leadoff and cleanup hitters. As a result, Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez made it a rough night for starter Eric Stults and reliever Anthony Bass. Puig had four hits and two stolen bases after getting benched in his previous game, and Gonzalez hit a pair of two-run homers to help send the Padres to a 9-2 loss...

Daily Friar 8.29.13

The best compliment you can give to any upper management is to perform well when thrown into a situation where they really need you. That probably came out a lot more convoluted than I meant it to. Anyways, with the absence of Edinson Volquez from the team (who has now signed with Dodgers) the Padres needed an arm to come up and fill in his spot in the rotation. Surely and ERA just...

Daily Friar 8.31.13

Former Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez made his presence known in last night’s game with two 2-run homers in route to a 9-2 Dodgers victory. For the Padres, outfielder Will Venable continued to add to his hit total in August with his 40th of the month. Second baseman Jedd Gyorko racked-up his 22nd double of the season, which ranks third among all rookies. Arizona’s A.J....

While You Were Drinking: Game 134 (SD vs LAD)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. The Padres started their final series in Los Angeles of 2013 with a disappointing — but not surprising — 9-2 loss to the Dodgers last night. Eric Stults pitched okay, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits with no walks & 3 K’s in 5.1 innings...

Dodgers sign Edinson Volquez to major league deal

getty images The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed pitcher Edinson Volquez to a major league deal. Volquez, 30, was recently cut loose by the San Diego Padres after compiling a 6.01 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP in 142 1/3 innings of work. The Dodgers are not placing their playoff hopes on the arm of Volquez so there is no harm in looking. Volquez could be an late season at the end of the rotation...

D-backs labor in 5-1 loss to Padres

Wade Miley shook off a shaky first inning to give his team a chance. Had his teammates given him even a little bit of support, the left-hander would have kept his undefeated home streak alive. Miley pitched seven effective innings after his rough start, but Arizona's offense stagnated against Robbie Erlin and San Diego's bullpen in a 5-1 loss to the Padres on Wednesday...

Padres pull away for 5-1 win over Arizona

By locking into the fastball, Will Venable sets himself up for the breaking balls. And when those pitches come, particularly up in the zone, he hasn't been missing many. Venable drove in the first of San Diego's two runs in the first inning and hit a two-run homer to cushion the lead, helping the Padres avoid a three-game sweep with a 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks...
