PLAYERS: Robbie Grossman

Robbie Grossman continued his hot hitting in the Arizona Fall League today, going 1-for-4 at the plate with his sixth homer of the year.  The home run came in the third inning with one on, tying the game at 2-2 at the time.  Mesa would go on to lose 8-6 in ten innings.  Grossman’s six homers is tied for the league lead.  He also leads the league in slugging and OPS out of all batters with 50+ at-bats.

Jeff Inman pitched an inning today, his second in the AFL.  Inman saw a runner reach on a fielding error, advance to second on a stolen base, and move to third on a ground out.  Inman got the runner out at home on a fielder’s choice play at the plate, after a ground ball to third.  He finished off the inning with a ground out to second, his fourth ground out of the inning.

Inman needed just 12 pitches to get through the inning.  11 of those pitches were fastballs, and Inman was 93-96 MPH with the pitch.  He hit 93 once, on the first pitch, hit 96 once, and averaged 94.5 MPH with his fastball.  He threw one curveball a 79 MPH.

Mesa plays tomorrow at 3:35 PM EST, with Gerrit Cole taking the mound for his third AFL start.

AFL Recap 10/24: Three More Hits for Grossman

The Mesa Solar Sox lost 8-3 today to Surprise.  In what is becoming a regular theme, Robbie Grossman had a big day, going 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  It was Grossman’s eighth multi-hit game in his last ten games, and took his line to a .406 average and a 1.161 OPS in 69 at-bats on the season.  Jarek Cunningha also got a start, but went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts, and...

News and notes

A few notes as the World Series wraps up… Out in Arizona, Robbie Grossman is still destroying the ball and Gerrit Cole had a much better second outing. Don’t forget to check their progress on the AFL Tracker page, which is updated daily. There were a few mini-rumors over the past couple days loosely connecting the Pirates Edwin Jackson and Francisco Cervelli. I wouldn’t put...

Gerrit Cole in the AFL: Volume 3

If Gerrit Cole's first AFL outing was a bit rough around the edges and the second was a little more polished, his third was definitely his best yet. He threw 3 2/3 no-hit innings on Wednesday afternoon, striking out four, walking one, and allowing one unearned run. Obviously it's way early in his career, but I can't pretend like I'm not enjoying every single one of...

Winter League updates: 10/26

Since I haven't had a chance yet, let's take a tour around the various winter and fall leagues and see how the Pirates are doing, both here and overseas. This isn't necessarily a comprehensive look since I'm just visually scanning rosters, so let me know if I missed anyone. Arizona Fall LeagueYou probably don't need me to tell you this, but Robbie Grossman is...

AFL Recap 10/26: Cole Gets His Second Win

Gerrit Cole got his second win of the season today in the Arizona Fall League, after another strong start for the Mesa Solar Sox.  Cole pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on a walk and no hits, with four strikeouts.  Cole started off with two perfect innings, including two strikeouts in the second.  He gave up a two out walk in the third, but finished off the frame...
