After finalizing the R.A. Dickey trade earlier in the week with the Blue Jays-which brought in uber prospects Travis d’Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard-the Mets will now look to continue its facelift this offseason by addressing other needs-most notably the outfield. So, where do the Mets turn to now? How do they go about upgrading the talent level for 2013 while also striving to remain committed towards building for the long-term? Moreover, how do the Mets go about upgrading the outfield, which is in need of an overhaul? Since the Mets received no outfield help from their biggest trading chip in Dickey (although they got there catcher of the future), the Mets will likely go to the free-agent route to upgrade their outfield corps. Well, for starters the Mets made a minor move earlier in the week by acquiring the services of Collin Cowgill (traded for Jefry Marte) from the A’s. Cowgill is an uninspiring right-handed outfielder with not much of a track record.  While, it’s great to nab a y...

R.A. Dickey’s Knuckleball in Slow Motion Will Make You Pee Your Pants

R.A. Dickey has spent the last couple years with the Mets, and was recently traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.  Last year he recorded a record of 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA.  Not to shabby huh??  All of his success can be attributed to the deadly knuckle ball that he throws.  As far as I know he is the only guy throwing it in the MLB right now and the first since Tim Wakefield to see...

Toronto Blue Jays acquired an ace

Just when you think the Toronto Blue Jays were done with their reeling and dealing they surprise their fans again. After weeks of speculation, the Jays acquired this year’s National League Cy Young winner, R.A. Dickey last night.  If this doesn’t convince you that the Blue Jays are trying to get into the postseason since 1993, then I don’t know what will. I’ve wrote countless...

Amazin Mess: Leaving Dickey Out Of 2012 Highlights Video Is Insulting To All Of Us

R.A. Dickey’s Cy Young Award and 20 wins don’t count as  highlights as far as the official Mets 2012 Highlights video is concerned. That is how Andy Martino of the Daily News puts it  In a video posted this week on the Mets official website, and emailed to fans, the team sent along holiday wishes, and presented a brief montage of highlights from the 2012 season. It was all...

A day later: Reflecting on the R.A. Dickey trade

Build a new foundation now, or keep up with “Proven Crap?”  That does seem to be the eternal debate when it comes to Met fandom in midst of horrendous down years.  It was heard during the down fall of the Worst Team That Money Can Buy run, it was heard after the spending spree of 2002, and the debate has been heard today in the days before the R.A. Dickey trade was announced...

For Mets, R.A. now stands for "Rebuilding ahead"

When I had the opportunity to interview R.A. Dickey last month, he told me that people were still suspicious of knuckleballers:   The problem is, people still have this bias against the pitch. They think it's a gimmick, they think it's a trick pitch, illegitimate, whatever adjective you want to try and put there you can. It takes a little while to get people past that....

Around the Web: Industry reaction to R.A. Dickey trade

Yesterday afternoon, the 2012 National League Cy-Young Award winner R.A. Dickey reached an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays on a two-year, $25 million extension allowing the Jays and the New York Mets to complete their seven-player deal.  With word of the deal breaking over the weekend, many Mets fans had plenty of time to voice their opinions on Twitter, FaceBook, and through...

New Mets prospect apologizes for anti-gay slur

New Mets prospect Noah Synderaard — acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in the R.A. Dickey trade — has already mastered the fine art of heading off the New York media before they get a chance to splatter a misstep all over the back pages. Yesterday, when the righthanded pitcher was asked to comment during a conference call where he was introduced — along with catcher Travis...

Newly Acquired Mets Prospect Noah Syndergaard Upsets Fanbase With Anti-Gay Slur

This is not a good way to greet a new team. Thanks to the attention from being included in the Blue Jays - Mets trade for pitcher R.A. Dickey, Noah Syndergaard, his Twitter account has gotten much more attention. One tweet, posted December 9, is one that would have many...

Blue Jays the Early Favorites to Win World Series After Picking Up R.A. Dickey

The Toronto Blue Jays are the early favorite to win the World Series after an offseason that has seen the top choice change several times so far. First the Detroit Tigers were the 2013 World Series favorites at Bovada. The Tigers have had a good offseason so far, signing former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter and re-signing pitcher Anibal Sanchez, the No. 2 free-agent hurler on the...

The Chance For Something Special

First, this has to be said. As a fan of the Mets, I want to thank R.A. Dickey for everything he has done and the example he set for any player facing adversity in the game today. I thank Omar Minaya for taking a chance on him, and thank Sandy Alderson for believing in him enough to give him 2 more guaranteed years with the Mets. Dickey made watching Mets games fun when there seemed...

From Left Field: In Mets’ History, Farm System Has Lacked Strong Hitting

After the trade sending R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays, I started thinking that the Mets really have never developed a top-notch catcher out of their minor league system. Todd Hundley is closest thing to being a productive home-grown catcher, which isn’t exactly saying much. Of course, the most productive catchers in team history, Gary Carter and Mike Piazza, were acquired via trade...

Links of the Day 12/20/12

Last links of the day ever? If that’s the case, then this was the last radio show ever. Of course, we’re all but certain to have seen the last NHL game ever, Mayan Apocalypse or not. Japanese shortstops: not entirely reliable. RA Dickey is 38. SCOREBOARD None…

Mets 2013 Top 10 prospects

It was not so long ago when the Mets had an impressive major league roster but their list of minor league prospects left a lot to be desired. Now, in late 2012 after the trade of R.A. Dickey, the model has been flipped on its head. Despite having two of last year’s top five prospects from my list (Matt Harvey (#1) and Kirk Nieuwenhuis (#5)) graduate to the majors, this group is...

Dugout Digest - finishing touches

With a majority of the high ticket free agents off the market, a lot of teams are simply working on putting the finishing touches on their teams for the 2013 season. The Blue Jays put the capper on their outstanding offseason by acquiring RA Dickey from the Mets, and then agreeing to a contract extension with him. The A's picked up Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima, who thinks...

Travis D’Arnaud, Las Vegas, and Catching Prospects

Travis D’Arnaud has always been a highly-regarded prospect. Even before his numbers took a leap forward in Double- and Triple-A, scouts liked his approach at the plate and thought his athleticism would bode well for his developing defense. He was the Mets’ prerequisite for any R.A. Dickey trade, and getting him was an important position-player prospect piece in their rebuilding...
