The Tampa Bay Rays hung on to veteran starter James Shields when they opted to not make any trades before Tuesday's deadline for non-waiver deals.

And that turned out to be a good move.

Shields showed why the Rays wanted to keep him around, pitching a shutout Tuesday, holding the Oakland A's to three singles in a 98-pitch masterpiece. The Rays won 8-0.

"That was as good as I've seen him in a long time," manager Joe Maddon said. "It's fortunate for us that he's still here. He's going to pitch like that the rest of this season."

Shields struck out 11, walked none and didn't allow a runner to second base. His performance was vital, as the bullpen needed the rest after covering 7 2/3 innings in Monday's marathon.

"It really hadn't bothered me to be honest with you," Shields said of hearing his name in trade rumors. "But, yeah, it's good to be a Ray."
