Jon Lester puts his spikes in the slab for the 24th time in 2013. In his previous 23 starts, Lester is 10-6 with a 4.52 ERA. He last faced the Royals in 2012 when he went 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA (4 ER/12 IP). He's made nine career starts against the home squad and is 6-2 with a 1.94 ERA. Put Your Makeup On, Fix Your Hair Up Pretty and Meet Jon Lester Tonight In Kansas City

After crawling out of a bizarre series in Houston that saw us score 22 runs and give up 17 over three games against the worst team in baseball, I’m not ready to take anything for granted in Kansas City. I know the Royals are “hot,” in that they’ve not lost a series since the All Star Break and have played at a 15-4 clip during that stretch and Amos Otis’ afro still has...

Lester lesser?

Somewhere near the beginning of last night’s eventual 5-1 loss to the surging Kansas City Royals, former Boston Globe columnist Mike Barnicle tweeted this about Red Sox starter Jon Lester: It doesn't seem to matter how he's doing - terrible or terrific - watching Jon Lester pitch is a painful, torturous experience. — Mike Barnicle (@mikebarnicle) August 9, 2013...

Preview: Royals open four-game home series against Boston

Jon Lester doesn't seem overly concerned about his last outing. The Boston left-hander, though, should be worried about the Kansas City Royals -- even if he has been at his best against them. Lester and the AL East-leading Red Sox continue their 10-game trip Thursday night against a Royals team going for a 14th win in 16 tries. After yielding two total runs while winning his...

Jon Lester Shows Plenty of Fight, Keeps Grinding in Solid Effort Despite Loss to Royals

If only mulligans were part of baseball. Just as one bad hole can ruin a golfer’s entire round, one bad inning can mean the difference between winning and losing for a starting pitcher. Just ask Jon Lester. The Royals eventually locked up a 5-1 victory Thursday, as Boston’s bats couldn’t solve Bruce Chen, who tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings before handing the keys over to Luke...

Is Jon Lester an ace? In a word: No

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer As the intensity of the Major League Baseball season begins to heat up, the Boston Red Sox have positioned themselves as one of the favorites to claim the American League pennant. Going forward, there are still a few question marks, none bigger than the rotation. Red Sox Nation received a minor scare when John Lackey rolled his ankle on the Minute...

Jon Lester Grinds Through Seven Innings, But Red Sox Can’t Solve Bruce Chen in Loss (Video)

Jon Lester turned in an all-around solid pitching performance Thursday night in Kansas City, allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work. Lester bounced back nicely after getting rocked by Arizona last Friday, but the Boston batting order was silenced by Red Sox alum Bruce Chen, who pitched 7 2/3 scoreless frames in a 5-1 win for the Royals. Kansas City has been arguably...

Jon Lester Takes Mound, David Ortiz Sits as Red Sox Begin Series With Surprising Royals

Just when it looked like Jon Lester was back on track after two wins to close out July, he took a giant leap back against the Diamondbacks last Friday. Lester allowed six runs on 11 hits against Arizona in four 1/3 innings of work. He didn’t factor in the decision, though, as Boston was able to come back despite being down late. Lester’s ERA is now up to 4.52, while his record...

Recap: Red Sox no match for surging Royals, lose 5-1

The Royals continued their recent tear with a commanding 5-1 win over the Red Sox. Kansas City jumped out to an early lead due to a sloppy 1st inning from Boston. Jon Lester threw a whopping 46 pitches and managed to escape with just three runs given up. The weak performance in the inning was aided by a horrendous display of outfield defense by the inimitable Jonny Gomes. On a routine...

Lester, Peavy, Doubront & Lackey To Face KC

The Red Sox have set their rotation for the four-game series against the hot Kansas City Royals. Jon Lester will try to get back on track tonight, followed by Jake Peavy on Friday, (new ace) Felix Doubront on Saturday, and John Lackey on Sunday. Boston enters the series tied with the Atlanta (and formerly, Boston) Braves for the most wins in baseball (70).

Chen out-pitches Lester as Royals keep rolling in 5-1 win over Boston

Ready to believe yet? It’s not just that Bruce Chen not only turned in a magnificent performance Thursday when the Royals opened what amounts to a four-game weekend measurement against Boston with a 5-1 victory at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals also pinned a loss on a long-time nemesis in Red Sox lefty Jon Lester who had a 1.64 ERA and a no-hitter against them on his career resume...

The Red Sox, who have the best record in the American League, lost for only the third time in 10 games. Chen, who was making his fifth start since beginning the season in the bullpen, did not allow a...
