The Pirates have tried to break out of their slump a few times in the last week, but they've had trouble stringing wins together since their 9-2 homestand. Part of the reason for that is that AJ Burnett has struggled a bit in his last two starts. He went into a slump in August and September last year, too, and that's one of the reasons that his calf injury didn't bother me so much. The Pirates really could use a performance from Burnett tonight to match the one that Liriano gave them last night. Starling Marte is a late scratch out of the lineup with the same hand/finger problem that kept him out of last night's game. Jose Tabata is leading off in his place, which makes much more sense than Josh Harrison's placement there last night. . Tyson Ross starts for the Padres tonight, and he's been a pleasant surprise for the Padres this year. His minor league numbers have always been middling, but he did strong work as a reliever this year and has been excellent...

Pirates Notebook: Why Felix Pie Joined the Bucs to Lead Off

Felix Pie will bring speed and some contact hitting to the Pirates, though not much else. SAN DIEGO — No time for formalities. Why was outfielder Felix Pie called up Wednesday to join the Pirates’ roster? “We felt he was our best available option,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. “With Travis [Snider] being on the DL, Alex Presley and Andrew Lambo in limbo...

Pirates win the lottery with Francisco Liriano

Or did they? I pick the games every day. Perhaps you know that. As such, I see trends. I also follow the games in the evening and on Monday night, I was watching as Francisco Liriano again won big with scary, impressive numbers. My first thought was, "Anybody could have had this guy." He was unwanted. His career was in such disarray that he could not ask for much money...

Burnett returns to form in Pirates' 8-1 win over Padres

A.J. Burnett had a lead before he took the mound Tuesday night. After that his usual serving of fastballs and knuckle curves did the trick. Burnett rebounded from two mediocre outings during the Pirates' 8-1 win against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park their second win in a row. The St. Louis Cardinals' loss Tuesday night meant that the Pirates took a two-game lead in...

I Guess it is Time To Start Paying Attention to the Pirates

The Pirates are a team that tend to just go away. They play well the first half of the season, getting Pittsburgh fans excited they may make the playoffs, or at least hit the .500 mark, and they end up imploding in the second half like no other team. It’s come to the point where I don’t really pay attention to them in the standings. If they are in first and the Cardinals are...

Liriano carves up Padres in Pirates' 3-1 win

Francisco Liriano took another step toward proving that his dismantling at Coors Field two weeks ago was a fluke. He carved up the San Diego Padres with a devastating slider forcing swing after swing at nothing but air in the Pirates' 3-1 victory Monday night at Petco Park. The Pirates maintained their one-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central after the Cardinals...

For Pirates, it has always been about pitching

Without a doubt, the Pittsburgh Pirates need to hit better if they want to be true contenders in the National League. When you consider the prospects of facing pitchers like Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, and a bunch of great players that don't play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, this offense makes it seem like any advance past the first round will be a surprise. But let's...

Game 126: Padres 2 Pirates 1

This is admittedly overly-reductive and entirely unfair, but in a way, Felix Pie's Pirate debut was actually decided by Felix Pie before any of his Pirate teammates -- the teammates that have made up the Pirates entirely without him this year prior to tonight -- contributed anything to this game at all. Pie lead off the game with an infield single (punctuated with a needless...
