The Evil Empire:
INSIDER: The Yankees defeated the Twins, 7-2, in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.
ON THE MOUND:
Ace, CC Sabathia got the ball for Game 1 of the ALDS for the Yankees and did not disappoint. He did exactly what the organization brought him here to do. Win. It was the first ever postseason game in the Bronx and CC's performance tonight is what the Yankees had expected. After struggling going 2-3 with a ERA above 7+ in the playoffs, tonight he pitched 6.2 innings allowing just 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits while striking out 8 Twins. He did not walk a batter in his sixth career postseason start and he was able to pick up his third career win.
The Twins took the early lead with two runs in the third inning against Sabathia, as Michael Cuddyer followed two singles with an RBI hit. Sabathia also had early trouble with his sequences with Jorge Posada, crossed up for a second time as a passed ball ticked off the catcher's mitt and allowed Joe Mauer to slide home safely.
In the 7th, Phil Hughes recorded a big inning-ending strikeout of Orlando Cabrera with runners on second and third.
Hughes went on to record two outs before Phil Coke got the only batter he was assigned to face in the eighth, as Mark Teixeira made a nice stab on a Jason Kubel liner.
Joba Chamberlain was given a standing ovation as he came out to record the final out of the eighth inning before Mariano Rivera closed out the Twins in the ninth inning. Things got a bit interesting for the Twins against Mo as they put runners at the corners but they left them stranded.
THE OFFENSE:
Down 2-0, Who else but Derek Jeter drove in the first Yankees postseason runs at the new Stadium, belting a two-run homer into the left-field seats off Twins left-hander Brian Duensing to tie the game. It was Jeter's 18th career postseason home run, tying him with Reggie Jackson and Mickey Mantle on baseball's all-time list, and it was Jeter's 10th career home run in an AL Division Series.
Nick Swisher gave the Yankees the lead off the rookie Duensing in the fourth with a bullet double down the left-field line, rattling the ball into the corner and sending Robinson Cano sliding home with the go-ahead run as Swisher stood on second base, all pumped up and pointing to the sky.
A-Rod gave the Yankees needed insurance in the fifth inning, lining a run-scoring single to left-center field to send home Jeter. It was Rodriguez's first hit with a runner on base in a span of 41 postseason at-bats, dating back to Game 4 of the 2004 AL Championship Series. He added an RBI single in the seventh off Jon Rauch.
Things didn't go so smooth for A-rod as he went hitless in his first two AB's but then the tables turned and he came through. Those hits were big. It sure helps build confidence. I was so happy for him. His girfriend and Jay-z were shown excited among the other fans plus his teammates in support. Hopefully he can keep this up and show what he's capable of doing. He's too good of a hitter not to.
Strict DH hitter, Hideki Matsui opened up the game up with a two-run homer off Francisco Liriano that landed in Monument Park, It was his seventh career postseason homer and his fourth in an ALDS. Duensing was charged with five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out three in his first career postseason start.
