Alex Avila is finally hitting like his old self. His old old self. Avila hit a pair of home runs including a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning that helped the Detroit Tigers squeak out a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in front of a sellout crowd Sunday at Comerica Park. It was Avila's fourth career multi-homer game and his first since May 24 2011. The win trimmed the Tigers' magic number to nine games and extended their division lead to 5 1/2 games over second-place Cleveland with 13 games remaining. The Royals meanwhile fell eight games behind the Tigers. The loss pushed them a half-game behind Baltimore in the AL wild-card chase and one game behind the New York Yankees.

Arm-chair managing: Prince Fielder and Jim Leyland

The Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers, 1-0, yesterday in a crisp, well-pitched game to keep the Royals' fleeting wildcard hopes alive. They preserved their narrow margin of victory by throwing Prince Fielder out at home plate for the final out of the game. I hate to be one of those second-guessing, arm-chair managers, but what the heck was Fielder doing out there anyway...

Jhonny Peralta likely to rejoin Detroit Tigers for final series

Detroit Tigers suspended infielder Jhonny Peralta is likely to rejoin the team for its final regular-season series in Miami later this month. The Tigers haven't made it official but manager Jim Leyland said he "assumes" Peralta will rejoin the team when he has completed serving his 50-game suspension. Leyland was not willing to say whether Peralta 31 will be activated...

Report: Jhonny Peralta Will Try Playing Left Field in Instructional League, Tigers Hope to Start Him in Outfield

Jhonny Peralta has called the infield his defensive home during his 11-year career, but when he returns to the Tigers lineup before the end of the season, he could find himself moving to the outfield. Currently serving a 50-game suspension for his connection to the Biogenesis scandal, Peralta has begun working out with the team to prepare for his return to the active roster. In...

Peralta to rejoin Tigers on Friday

The Detroit Tigers will reinstate Jhonny Peralta from his drug suspension this weekend. General manager Dave Dombrowski said Wednesday in Minnesota that Peralta will join the AL Central leaders in Miami on Friday for a season-ending three-game series. Dombrowski said the organization has not discussed whether Peralta will be on the postseason roster. Peralta's 50-game penalty...

Jhonny Peralta to begin transition to left field in the Tigers’ Florida Instructional League

The Tigers have yet to determine whether or not suspended shortstop Jhonny Peralta will return to the team once his 50-game suspension is up at the end of September however the writing seems to be on the wall. According to the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers have sent Peralta to their Florida Instructional League to begin a transition to left field a position that the 31-year old...

Rick Porcello sharp, Tigers beat Mariners 4-2

Rick Porcello struck out 10 in six innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 on Monday night to move a step closer to their third straight AL Central title. Victor Martinez broke a 1-all tie in the sixth with a run-scoring single, and Omar Infante followed with his own RBI single. Porcello (13-8) allowed a run and five hits with two walks, falling one strikeout...

Game 2013.149: Royals at Tigers

85-63, Magic Number is 10. Gotta hop on a plane, so a few disjointed thoughts. Tigers lose a playoff type game last night in a game where the AL’s best pitching flexed some muscle and completely shut down the Tigers. I wasn’t able to tune in early but did catch the Infante double. I agree with Brookens’ decision to send Fielder there, though I hardly agree that it takes ...

Game 2013.151: Mariners at Tigers

87-63, x games up on whoever. (Actually 6 games up on Cleveland…. with 12 left to play.) Can the Tigers make it to the elusive 25 over mark? Might they actually be able to sneak into home field advantage for the ALCS or ALDS, by and by? Stay tuned. Last night: Detroit 4, Seattle 2. It took 3 innings before Porcello found his A-game, and nearly 3 more before the Tigers really got...

Game 2013.150: Mariners at Tigers

86-63, 5 up on Cleveland, KC effectively eliminated. 6-7 September record; more of the same gets Detroit to 92-70… and the ALDS in Oakland. Big win yesterday against the Royals, big loss the day before, biggest series of the season on many levels. Gut check: Pass. (Also down to the wire now in the Game Poster League. Good job, Kevin. I guess I’m the only one left who can’t...

Tigers' Rick Porcello takes wind out of Mariners

In the best and final inning of the best back-to-back starts of his career Rick Porcello bailed out Omar Infante. In the bottom of that inning after Victor Martinez continued his sensational second half Infante resumed his recent ability to send Prince Fielder homeward in a big spot. Those sixth-inning events lifted the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over Seattle on Monday night at Comerica...

Mariners-Tigers Preview

The Detroit Tigers are approaching a third straight division championship. They'll hope Rick Porcello will have a playoff-caliber outing Monday when they look to pick up their third straight series win as the Seattle Mariners come to town. The Tigers (86-63) have won four of their last five, including two of three from Kansas City over the weekend. Pitching has been at the...

Magic number falling as Tigers defeat Mariners

The Tigers continued their push towards the postseason Monday night with a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three game series from Comerica Park. Rick Porcello was stellar in the outing going six innings allowing one run one and five hits while striking out an uncharacteristic 10 batters. Joaquin Benoit came in during the 9th to record his 21st save of the season...

Royals get final out at plate and hold on for 1-0 victory over Tigers

There’s no telling of course what the next two-plus weeks hold for the Royals in what remains a long-shot quest to reach the postseason for the first time in 28 years. But … if destiny ultimately beckons bookmark Saturday night’s 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers which ended when catcher Salvy Perez executed a blind grab on a throw before applying the tag at the plate. ...
