Tampa Bay Rays starter Alex Cobb endured every pitcher’s worst nightmare against the Kansas City Royals Saturday night. While leading off the fifth inning, Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer scorched a hard line drive that hit Cobb in the head. Radar guns indicated the ball was travelling 104.2 mph.
Alex Cobb crumpled to the ground while the ball ricocheted back to Rays catcher Jose Lobaton, who threw to first to retire Hosmer. The Kansas City first baseman, however, was far more worried about Cobb. “I’m not going to lie to you,” Hosmer said to the Kansas City Star reporter Bob Dutton, “I was not focused on the game at all. I’m just thinking of how he’s doing.”
Rays right field Matt Joyce said to SI.com, “”I think everybody heard it.The loudest and worst ball hitting somebody I’ve ever seen.”
Trainers from both teams crowded around Cobb, who was immobilized and removed from the field on a board.
