The Yankees season came to an end with a 8-1 defeat and a 4-0 sweep at the hands of the Tigers. As the ALCS went on, Alex Rodriguez found himself ridding the pine as he was in the midst of  a 3-27 slump. Rodriguez was quickly blamed for the Yankees lack of offense, though he wasn't the only one that stunk it up (Everyone not named Raul Ibanez). Rumors began to surface that the Yankees and Miami Marlins discussed a trade for Rodriguez, though both teams denied the talks.
Rodriguez has five-years and $114mm remaining on his contract and has gradually seen his numbers decline. This season he hit .272/.353/.430 with 18 home runs. Rodriguez hit under 20 home runs for the second time in his career (minimum 50 games).
His salary and his recent lack of production makes him almost untradeable. But lets not get ahead of ourselves as Rodriguez has a no-trade clause and would have to approve any deal. USA Today's Bob Nightengale caught up with Rodriguez after the game who said he had no intention of leaving New York. “I will be back. I have a lot to prove,” Rodriguez said. “I’ve never thought about going to another team. My focus is on staying here. Let’s make that very, very clear.”
Could the Yankees threaten A-Rod with more pine time if he doesn't accept a trade? Sure, but A-Rod loves New York and would probably only accept a trade to a few cities like Miami, Chicago or Los Angeles. If he does in fact get traded, the Yankees will have to pay most if his salary and expect little in return. Either way, the last few weeks have created issues between Rodriguez and members in the front office that will need to be addressed before Rodriguez can solely focus on returning and helping the team.
