On Saturday, Rockies pitcher Alex White was pulled over under suspicion of DUI, and after a breathalyzer and field sobriety tests, he was brought into custody. His BAC was .174, which crushed the .08 limit that the state of Arizona has. Now, White could be facing something worse than the DUI: a charge for extreme DUI.

The Denver Post is reporting that if White's blood test results confirm the .174 reading from Saturday, that the extreme DUI charge will be given to White. What exactly does extreme DUI consist of? Well, we're going to let the state of Arizona explain that to you.

First-time Extreme DUI

CLASS OF CRIME Class 1 Misdemeanor MAXIMUM JAIL Six (6) months MINIMUM JAIL 30 days COUNSELING A drug/alcohol screening will be performed. The results of the screening can affect the duration of counseling. MINIMUM FINE $250 + surcharge ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL PENALTY $250 assessment to the Arizona DUI Abatement Fund; additional $1000 to State Prison Fund. PROBATION 5 years (maximum)

Driver’s License Consequences

SUSPENSION 90 days (work permit after 30 days) INTERLOCK DEVICE Required

Regardless of how stupid a professional athlete has to be to get a DUI in this day and age, with taxi service and designated drivers available, this is bad news for White if the higher charge sticks. I assume he'd try to get the jail time pushed until after the season, and the fine isn't a big deal for a guy making six figures a year, but this really is a "don't screw up again" type charge. The conditions that come with a second extreme DUI sentence are very harsh, but appropriate.

Within the Denver Post article linked above, White claims that he only had two drinks before leaving the party he was attending. He was cited in a high traffic area in downtown Scottsdale. So not only is he a liar, he's irresponsible too. Nothing about this situation is good, personally for White or professionally for the Rockies.

White was acquired by the Rockies last July in the Ubaldo Jimenez deal.
