The Red Sox seem to be pretty serious about enforcing a suspension for pitcher Alfredo Aceves. Aceves was suspended three games on Saturday for conduct detrimental to the team after throwing a fit when he wasn’t used to close out Friday’s 4-3 win over the Royals. He reportedly stormed out of manager Bobby Valentine’s office on Friday night after Andrew Bailey pitched the 9th instead of him. He also refused to be held accountable for his poor performance in Thursday’s loss to the Angels.

When the Red Sox traveled from Boston to Anaheim following Monday’s win over the Royals, Aceves was not scheduled to be on the team flight because he’s serving the final day of his suspension. Manager Bobby Valentine still said he expected to see Aceves rejoin the team.

“On the same plane, no,” manager Bobby Valentine said, according to MLB.com. “I expect him to be in California though.

“Like I said, it just deals with being responsible for your actions and understanding that all actions have consequence,” Valentine said Monday. “It’s just a simple rule. Remember, I don’t have a lot of rules, but one of the rules I stated early on is that you don’t do anything to embarrass yourself, your teammates or your organization.”

There’s been plenty of drama surrounding the Red Sox this season — especially concerning the players’ relationship with Bobby Valentine — but it looks like management is finally taking control of the team. The problem is the discipline is coming too late in the season.
