The Mets hosted an All-Star game For the fist time since 1964, back when it was Shea Stadium. From the festivities of the weekend to the game itself it was one to remember. The 84th All-Star weekend and game were historical in so many aspects. There was a lot of firsts for some, and it was the end for others. It was the first time in baseball history that there had been shutouts in back-to-back years. The previous year, the AL got crushed 8-0. Also, Yoenis Cespedes, of the Oakland Athletics, became the first Cuban to ever win the Home Run Derby defeating the always-exciting young Bryce Harper. Matt Harvey, just 24 years of age, started in his first All-Star Game in front of his home crowd at Citi Field. The American League won the game by a score of 3-0, surrendering just 3 Hits, one of them to the hometown David Wright, of the National League ball club. This All-Star game was also a look into the future of what baseball has in store, as well as a look in the past of the great players that will be leaving their incredible legacy behind. What legacy is that? Of course the incomparable, super-human like, Mariano Rivera. When he jogged out of the bullpen to no other than his song, Enter Sandman, for his final appearance in an All-Star game, the fans, regardless of their allegiance to their teams knew what they were witnessing. 50 thousand plus boisterous fans were raining him with cheers which then led to the players from each dugout giving him a standing ovation as he stood there on the mound alone like an angel on cloud nine soaking it all in. As a die heart Yankees and baseball fan, watching him take in his moment you realized that an era of baseball is coming to a close, and that you are witnessing greatness at its finest. Not only did he retire the side as he often does, 1,2,3, but before every pitch it looks as if he is taking a bow, as the greatest of all time should. From Mariano Rivera making his final appearance to the young budding stars of Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Jose Fernandez, Jean Segura, among others all ages of 20-22, it is incredible to see where the game of baseball is heading. Although there is a cloud of the biogenesis investigations hanging over Major League Baseball, as a baseball fanatic, it is beautiful to witness just from one game, the lapse of time from where the game has been in the past with Rivera, to where it is going with Trout, Harper and the rest of the young star talent that plays the historic game of baseball today.
