The Pirates made a bunch of roster moves today. I was at the game and didn’t get a chance to update as they happened, so here’s a quick rundown:

First of all, Bryan Morris was called up from Indianapolis. Jordy Mercer was sent down. Morris is the only remaining player in the organization from the Jason Bay trade, and has pitched very well out of the bullpen this season. The 25-year old might have just been added for the day since the bullpen was limited, and he did not get into the game.

Morris may be headed right back to AAA because the Bucs need to free up a spot for Drew Sutton, who they claimed off waivers today. Yes, THAT Drew Sutton…the guy the Pirates acquired a few weeks ago, then traded away one day later. He tore it up for the Rays for four games, prompting plenty of snarky comments about the move…but then went back to the replacement-level hitter that he is.  Still, if the Bucs use him more often than Mercer (which would be impossible not to), he’s worth having around, I suppose.

Charlie Morton was moved to the 60-day DL to free up a 40-man roster spot for Sutton. A corresponding move still needs to be made for the 25-man–I suspect it will be Morris going back down.

Next up on the docket: Jeff Karstens is back, and you’ll see him on the mound TONIGHT in Philly. The old plan was to give Jeff another rehab start on Sunday, but he pitched well enough in his last outing to bypass that, I guess. Brad Lincoln, despite his strong start on Saturday, will be headed back to the bullpen. Kevin Correia will stay in the rotation. The Bucs will need to make another move to activate Karstens.

Lastly, there won’t be any moves involving Kevin Youkilis in black and gold. Although the Bucs were reportedly in talks with Boston regarding Youk, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
