In the last piece, I looked at a different way of evaluating closers. In this piece, we will apply the same numbers to setup guys. Setup guys are always underrated on draft day. However, with many leagues adding holds to the pitching stat lines, they are becoming a bigger factor. Furthermore, many of them are the first available closers when the regular closer goes down with an injury of proves to be ineffective.
Today, we are looking primarily at three statistics that help predict setup success. The first is OPS against and it has become one of the better predictors of success in terms of saves and holds. The other two statistics are far more important for setup guys than for closers. Clean game percentage is the percentage of times a reliever retires each of the hitters he faces. That in conjunction with inherited runners scored percentage is far more important because of the number of times these pitchers come in with runners on base.
