MVN:
After being swept by Boston, and losing 1-0 to the Atlanta Braves last night, the long awaited fall from grace might be coming into fruition. There are many skeptics (I guess me being one of them) that think this Jays team is not for real, and were waiting for the numbers to average out. The hitters had been overachieving all season, in the meanwhile carrying an above average starting rotation. But these last four games have looked a lot like the uninspired Jays from last season. Lets take a look at some numbers:During the Boston series, the Jays bats were able to muster 30 hits, but only produced 5 runs from that. All that means is that there was no clutch hitting and a lot of double plays. It also doesn't help that Boston beat up up on our rookie pitchers, showing that THEY are the legitimate contenders.During every game of that series, I remember thinking, "please dont get swept, just win one" My justification for this was that the Boston series was the most important series so far this season, one to show the baseball world that the Jays should be taken seriously. Both momentum and morale was high as they had just swept Chicago, but all that was taken away by Boston. A dangerous time ensues as we may see the Jays fall further. The skeptics may have been right, the fall from first place might be happening right before our eyes...and so it begins?Thoughts for the night:There were a flurry of moves following the Boston series that saw Brett Cecil, Robert Ray and Travis Snider demoted to AAA. Ricky Romero, Joe Ingett and Casey Janssen, who will be starting tonight's game, were all recalled. Joe Inglett was a star for the Jays on a pathetic offensive lineup last season, as he was the only batter to post a .300 average. It will be interesting to see if Romero can keep pitching the way he did at the beginning of the season, and finally, FINALLY, Janssen has returned. Following a successful stint as a setup man two season ago, Janssen missed the entire 2008 season on the disabled list. It is good to have him back, but after missing so long, who knows what kind of pitcher he will be.I think it was harsh to send Cecil down to AAA after two brilliant starts and one bad start. Cecil is the future, and while he will inevitably find himself in AAA for the majority of this season, I think one or two more starts would have been good. Especially since he has to go back to AAA with low self-esteem having been handled by the Red Sox.I think Janssen's return is going to mirror that of Marcum. Marcum will miss the entire 2009 season, similar to Janssen missing 2008. Lets hope both can find their form as soon as possible.
