Eight seasons. 87 wins. One Cy Young Award. Three top five Cy Young voting finishes. 70 pitches thrown in the last two seasons. Those are just some of the accomplishments of one Brandon Webb, the former 8th round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks ten years ago, who today became a free agent. Webb is second on Arizona’s all-time list in victories (behind only Randy Johnson) with 87. He led the National League in wins twice (2006, 2008), and led the Diamondbacks’ to their 4th NL West championship in 2007, when he finished second in the Cy Young Award voting. Webb, of course, was injured on opening day of 2009, and hasn’t pitched in a game since, despite the Diamondbacks’ organization picking up an $8.5 million option on his contract last off-season. Oops. So with the end of Webb’s stay in Arizona, members of the Diamondbacks’ organization have issued statements on his upcoming test of the free agent market and his time in the desert.
