Atlanta Braves rookie shortstop Andrelton Simmons had the cast on his right hand removed Friday and his fractured right pinky placed in a removable splint, braves.com reports. It looks, however, that his return time may be closer to eight weeks from the original injury sustained on July 9, putting his timetable around the first of September. “I think it’s going to be closer to eight weeks than six weeks,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “At the best it would be the last week of August.” Simmons injured his right hand in a headfirst slide while hustling out a double against the Philadelphia Phillies nearly a month ago. With the cast removed, Simmons will now be able to start physical therapy and eventually return to baseball activities. He will complete a minor league rehab assignment before returning to Atlanta. The therapy for now will involve light exercises to regain the range of motion in his wrist and fingers. “It’s not 100 percent healed yet,” Simmons told ajc.com. “It’s pretty close
