Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen hooked up with the fine folks at MLB’s Fan Cave to show off his acting flair by impersonating Tom Cruise in a few of the actor’s more memorable movie roles.  Apparently Cruise dons a Pittsburgh Pirates cap as a disguise in his new action flick Jack Reacher, which I guess is a good enough reason to get Cutch to break out his best Cruise imitations. Three things stand out for me in this fairly hilarious video… 1.  McCutchen didn’t wear the tightie whities while lip synching and dancing to Old-Time Rock ‘n’ Roll like Cruise did in Risky Business, which is something we can all be thankful for 2.  “I LOVE BLACK PEOPLE!” is one of the best lines in Jerry Maguire, and Cutch delivers it with perfect aplomb 3.  The Bucs star can’t sing worth a damn but he does look exceptionally good in a curly blond wig McCutchen is one of the few bright spots in the Pirates organization, and is perhaps the only player universally loved by Pittsburgh baseball fans.  This will only help to increase his surging popularity among Buccos fans, as well as baseball fans in general. Andrew McCutchen breaks out Tom Cruise impression (Video)

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen breaks out his Tom Cruise impersonation in a new MLB Fan Cave video entitled "The History of Cruise". It just so happens that the latest Cruise movie, Jack Reacher, opened this weekend and was filmed in Pittsburgh. In the video, McCutchen does his best to reenact some of the classic scenes from Cruise's movies, including...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Grading the offseason to date

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Joyous Kwanzaa.  A few dozen players later, and around $35,000,000 spent on free agency, how is the offseason of the Pittsburgh Pirates under GM Neal Huntington progressing?  (Signings or trades that appear to be purely for minor league depth are omitted.) 11/3/12:  SP Kevin Correia, RP Chad Qualls, and C Rod Barajas elect free agency.  See...

Pirates moving in right direction with Francisco Liriano signing, Joel Hanrahan trade

A lot has been made about the Pittsburgh Pirates signing long-time Twins starter Francisco Liriano to a two-year, $12.75 million deal. Over at WHYGAVS, our own Pat Lackey thinks the deal is a gamble, but one worth taking with a potential huge payoff. The Pirates are also in the midst of trading closer Joel Hanrahan to the Red Sox as part of a six player deal that would net them four...

Liriano the Buc, and Three Starters on the Comeback Trail

Francisco Liriano has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract worth $12.75 million with the Pirates according to Jon Heyman. In less publicized news, a trio of once exciting pitchers agreed to minor-league contracts. Jeremy Bonderman signed a deal with the Mariners, Scott Kazmir signed with the Indians, and Rich Harden inked a deal with the Twins. None of the three pitchers pitched...

Winter Leagues Recap: News and Notes

In an abbreviated schedule from last night, Darren Ford made his return to Winter ball in Venezuela. He left Leones de Caracas after the team’s game on November 19th to return home to spend time with family and his return to the VWL wasn’t certain at the time. Ford went 1-for-4 last night, with a walk and run scored. Through 32 games, he has a .281/.358/.378 line. In Puerto Rico...

First Pitch: An Incomplete Observation on an Incomplete Trade

For some reason, the Pirates can’t make a move involving a relief pitcher without the deal dragging on unnecessarily for days. We first heard that Jason Grilli had signed on the final day of the winter meetings. Then we heard he didn’t sign yet. Then he did. Then he didn’t. Then a week later he signed for real. Now we’ve got a Joel Hanrahan trade. The floodgate of rumors...

Joel Hanrahan News: Sunday

The Joel Hanrahan deal to the Red Sox still hasn’t been completed and it may not be done for a few days at least. After a night of suspense that ended with no new confirmed details after 5PM, we have word from Jon Heyman that there are still discussions going on about the final player or two, and the Pirates and Red Sox might not get a deal done until after Christmas. Boston reliever...

Pirates agree to deal Hanrahan to Red Sox

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a deal in place to send closer Joel Hanrahan to the Boston Red Sox in what will amount to a six-player trade upon conclusion.

Pirates Trade Joel Hanrahan to Red Sox as Part of a Six-Player Deal

The Boston Red Sox continued to rebuild and reshape yesterday when the picked up Joel Hanrahan among others from the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Hanrahan was reportedly one player in the six-player deal between the two teams, but he was the highlight of the package going to Boston. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports the deal includes four players to Pittsburgh and two to Boston. ...

Joel Hanrahan watch day 2: Mark Melancon could change things quite a bit

We're rolling up to the 18-hour milestone in the extended saga that's been the Joel Hanrahan trade, and we still don't know the full details of the trade. This is what we think we probably might know at this point: Joel Hanrahan will go to the Red Sox, along with another unnamed Pirate or Pirate prospect. Stolmy Pimentel and Jerry Sands will come to the...

It Takes a Hammer To Build a Team

Joel Hanrahan is a great closer, no matter what happened in the second half last season. He’ll help the Red Sox, which had some issues in the bullpen last season. But “The Hammer” — who once came to the Pirates at the cost of Sean Burnett and Nyjer Morgan — will also help his former team on his way out. If you can sign a guy who can do what your incumbent can do, but...

First Pitch: Mark Melancon and Remembering When Joel Hanrahan Was a Throw In

There seems to be some debate over whether relief pitcher Mark Melancon is involved in the pending Joel Hanrahan trade. A few outlets are reporting that Melancon is in the deal, although other outlets are saying that Melancon himself hasn’t been told anything. The Hanrahan trade will be delayed until after Christmas, so like most of this deal we’re analyzing aspects of the trade...

Is The Hanrahan Trade Ever Getting Done?

Well it’s been almost a day since we found out that Joel Hanrahan has been traded to the Red Sox for at least Jerry Sands and Stolmy Pimentel and still no word on the final pieces.  Apparently the Pirates are sending one more player to the Sox and the Sox are sending two players to [...]

Joel Hanrahan Shipping Up To Boston?

At least that’s how it sounds.  The rumored return is apparently Jerry Sands, with another player or players also coming the Pirates way. Joel Hanrahan has been good, not great for the Pirates.  He’s been a solid pitcher and the Pirates squeezed a ton out of him. Sands is 25 year old righty that can [...]
