NEW YORK -- The Los Angeles Angels flexed their own muscles Sunday against the homer-happy New York Yankees, then survived a ninth-inning rally to barely hold them off. The Angels chased Yankees starter Ivan Nova by scoring six runs off him, and added five runs against New York's bullpen in a 10-8 win at Yankee Stadium. The Angels and Yankees combined for eight homers, with each team knocking out four. Erick Aybar, Albert Pujols, Maicer Izturis and Mark Trumbo went deep for Los Angeles, which salvaged a win in the series finale after dropping the first two games. Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson, Eric Chavez and Mark Teixeira homered for the Yankees, who ended their three-game winning streak. Jered Weaver (11-1) wasn't his usual dominant self, allowing five runs on 10 hits in seven innings, including the three homers. But Nova (10-4) fared worse, coughing up six runs on nine hits, including three of home runs, in six innings. Jason Isringhausen pitched a perfect e...

Yankee fans cannot blame Alex Rodriguez

There is no ‘i’ in TEAM. The New York Yankees were looking to sweep the LA Angels yesterday, but after a hard fought game the Halos beat the Bombers 10-8. Of course the game went down to the last out, as the Yankees had the bases loaded and Alex Rodriguez couldn’t get the job as he popped up for the final out. Overall a successful weekend in the Bronx as the Yankees won the...

Open Letter to Brian Cashman: Don't even pick up the phone

Dear Madam or Sir,Once again, the Yankiverse is buzzing over potential trades. Because it's July, we always go through this pointless charade, like the 12 days of Christmas, wondering who we can get. And if we do cut a deal, it's immediately cheered and a year later, lambasted. This year, let's do nothing. That was the policy of perhaps the greatest GM in modern...

Walden placed on DL

NEW YORK Angels reliever Jordan Walden was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of a right biceps strain, an injury that is not believed to be serious but one the hard-throwing right-hander could no longer pitch through. Walden said his shoulder had been bothering him for a few weeks and flared up bad after his last outing against the Baltimore Orioles on July 8. After...

Yanks' Martin starts second half with winning hit

Russell Martin's first half was about as bad as any player in baseball. That's what made the start to his second half so sweet. Martin delivered the game-winning hit for the Yankees, who scored four times in the eighth inning to beat the Angels, 6-5, at Yankee Stadium. The catcher, who had already thrown out two would-be base- stealers, then closed the game by throwing...

Haren's back healing faster than expected

The Angels are optimistic that righty Dan Haren's first trip to the DL won't be an extended stay. After finally admitting that lower back pain had significantly contributed to his poor season, Haren went on the disabled list following his July 3 start in Cleveland. He seems to have bounced back quickly with the down time and physical therapy. Haren threw a full bullpen...

Yankees 5, Angels 3

NEW YORK -- The Los Angeles Angels can make a nuisance of themselves, so often looking to take an extra base -- if not outright steal it -- that opponents can get fidgety. Unless they can just swat away such problems. The New York Yankees have been known to do that all year, and did so again with another pair of home runs helping them to a 5-3 win over the Angels on Saturday...

Podcast Episode 14: Mid-Season Musings

I put this episode together after the Yankees opened the second half of the 2012 season by taking 2 out of 3 against the Angels. Topics include the aftermath of Robinson Cano's horrible Home Run Derby, disappointing facts about Melky Cabrera, my disdain for Paul O'Neill (Yes, you read that right.) and Darnell McDonald's dred locs. I close things out by talking about my...

A look at Joe DiMaggio (Video)

On the anniversary of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak we take a look at Joltin' Joe's career. Joe DiMaggio, nicknamed "Joltin' Joe" and "The Yankee Clipper", played his entire 13-year career for the New York Yankees. He is perhaps best known for his 56-game hitting streak (May 15 – July 16, 1941), a record that still...

2012 MLB Power Rankings – Week 14

The second-half of the 2012 MLB seasonis officially underway, and my apologies for the rankings being a day late this week. NYY are best team in baseball still. The New York Yankees were the best team in baseball before the All-Star Break and they still are as they took the first two games from the red-hot Los Angeles Angels and are looking to sweep tomorrow. The Rangers are hanging...

Phelps Going For Gold

ROCHESTER, NY - In about two weeks, many Americans will have their eyes set on Michael Phelps as he tries to swim his way to another gold medal. For the New York Yankees, the team is focusing more on another Phelps, David Phelps, as he makes the transition back to a starting pitcher.
