Zack Greinke gave up one run and Howie Kendrick broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the sixth, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Miguel Cabrera's two-out solo homer in the eighth chased Greinke. Scott Downs got the Angels out of the inning by getting Prince Fielder to ground out and retired Brennan Boesch to lead off the ninth. Garrett Richards struck out Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta for the final two outs to earn his first career save. Greinke (2-2) gave up five hits and two walks while striking out five over 7 2-3 innings. Rick Porcello (9-9) allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings. He allowed a walk and struck out six. Greinke retired 11 straight before Cabrera hit a two-out double in the sixth. He stranded Cabrera by striking out Prince Fielder looking and arguing about the called strike. Brennan Boesch led off the seventh with a single and Alex Avila drew a two-out walk before Greinke struck out ...

Mike Scioscia Says Angels' Rotation Showing 'Glimmers of Hope' in Reversing Trend of Bad Starts (Video)

When the Angels acquired Zack Greinke from the Brewers on July 27, in a move that would supposedly bolster an already-solid rotation, manager Mike Scioscia had no idea that his pitching staff was about to take a severe turn for the worse. Prior to the All-Star break, the Angels had the sixth-lowest ERA in all of Major League Baseball. Since then, they've had the second-highest...

Pujols out of starting lineup again for Angels

Albert Pujols is out of the starting lineup again for the Los Angeles Angels and manager Mike Scioscia indicates the star won't start Sunday, either. Pujols hasn't played since Wednesday because of an injured right calf. Scioscia said he tried to run before Saturday's game at Detroit, but the team wants to take advantage of an off day Monday, give Pujols more time off...

Mark Trumbo fouls pitch into Angels radio broadcast booth (Video)

Los Angeles Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo fouled a pitch into the Angels radio broadcast booth during Thursday night's game at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. It happened in the first inning as Trumbo fouled the 1-0 pitch back behind home plate. Angels broadcaster Jose Mota put his hand up in an attempt to protect himself, but as the ball bounced into the booth...

Washing Off the Stink of Mike Trout

You can’t swing a laptop by its power cable without hitting some article about how great Mike Trout has been this season, and how such a performance from a rookie is so extremely rare. Since his call-up in late April and his subsequent tear through the American League, Trout has been a fantastic story. I get interested about a lot of things during the baseball season, but very...

Albert Pujols Latest

The LA Angels 240 million dollar man has been free and clear of injury all season long; until now. Albert Pujols left Wednesday night’s game in Boston during the fourth inning, after apparently straining his right calf while running the bases.  According to an ESPN LA report,   Pujols indicated after the game that his calf had been tightening up. Pujols reportedly had an MRI...

Jackson's diving grab saves Tigers

It wasn't "The Catch," but it certainly was "A Catch," and a very important one at that. Austin Jackson is giving the Detroit Tigers the best long-term center field play since the days of Mickey Stanley (1964-78), and the current occupant has a case for being better by dint of superior speed. Stanley seldom left his feet to make a catch, simply because...

Tigers fan with 'lucky shirt' catches foul ball (Video)

A fan attended Friday night's Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park wearing a T-shirt that read "THIS IS MY LUCKY SHIRT". That may have actually brought the fan some luck, as he managed to snag a foul ball hit by Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera. It happened in the bottom of the sixth as the "lucky" fan in the right field stands reached over several...

Angels-Tigers Preview

Both Detroit and Los Angeles received a bit of a scare in the last few days as Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols were forced out of games with injuries. While the Tigers are hopeful Cabrera will be back for Friday night's series opener, the visiting Angels don't seem as optimistic about Pujols' return. Cabrera left Thursday's 3-2, 11-inning win over Toronto in the...

Game Recap 8/24/12: Bust no more - Angels 2, Tigers 1

Well, would you look at that.  Zack Greinke dominating another AL contender.  Not too shabby for a supposed trade deadline bust, if I don't say so myself. Why Greinke pitching well is a surprise to anyone is beyond me.  He's had some rough spots so far with the Angels, but thus far those spots have mostly been one or two inning blips.  Perhaps there was something...

Tigers' Cabrera in lineup, Angels' Pujols out

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is back in the lineup with a heavily taped right ankle. Cabrera was set to be the designated hitter Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Cabrera says he hopes to be healthy enough to play third base in the second game of the series on Saturday night. He left Thursday's game against Toronto during the second inning with soreness...

Cabrera appeared to be limping as he ran to first base following a flyout in the Tigers' first at-bat. Continue reading →

Pirates claim Hisanori Takahashi

The Pirates have claimed Hisanori Takahashi off waivers from the LA Angels. The lefty reliever will report to Pittsburgh in a day or so, at which point the Bucs will make a roster move to clear a spot for him. Takahashi is a 37 year old from Japan in his third big league season. He’s 0-3 with a 4.93 ERA this season, but was better in his first two (3.61 in 2010 with the Mets and...

Game Recap 8/23/12: We will overcome - Angels 14, Red Sox 13

So, that just happened. Wow, what a game.  And I say that as a guy who didn't watch any of it, as my Angels TV boycott remains in effect.  But even monitoring it over Gameday and Twitter, I think it is safe to say that it was the craziest game of the year by far.  Or at least the craziest game that didn't make Angel fans want to impale themselves on a lawn sprinkler...
