ANAHEIM, CA — The Angels ON Sunday acquired right-handed pitcher Dan Haren from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Joe Saunders (LHP), minor league pitchers Patrick Corbin (LHP) & Rafael Rodriguez (RHP) and a Player to be Named Later (PTBNL). Today’s announcement was made by General Manager Tony Reagins.

Haren, 29, comes to the Angels as one of the National League’s top pitchers. His 30 combined wins over the last two campaigns trail only consecutive Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum (33). The three-time All-Star (2007-09) has averaged 15 wins per year over his last five seasons. In 2009, he set career-highs in innings pitched (229.1) and strikeouts (223) while walking just 32 batters.

In 2010, the 6′-5″, 215-pound right-hander is 7-8 with one complete game and a 4.60 ERA (141 IP – 72 ER) with 141 strikeouts in 21 starts with Arizona. His 141 strikeouts are tied for the National League lead. Haren has walked just 29 batters in 141 IP, T6th fewest per 9 IP in the N.L (1.9).

The California native (Monterey Park) is a veteran of eight seasons in the Majors, compiling a career record of 86-70 with 10 complete games, two shutouts and a 3.71 ERA (1367.2 IP – 564 ER) in 217 games (208 starts). He has appeared with St. Louis (2003-04), Oakland (2005-07) and Arizona (2008-10), appearing in the post-season in 2004 and 2006. Haren attended Bishop Amat High School (La Puente, CA) and Pepperdine University (Malibu, CA).

Saunders, 29, has compiled a 54-32 record and 4.29 ERA in 115 games over six seasons with the Angels from 2005-10. The left-hander posted a 6-10 record and 4.62 ERA with 45 walks and 64 strikeouts over 120.2 innings in 20 starts this season. From 2008-09, his 33-14 record was second in the American League only to Roy Halladay during that span. He has limited left-handed hitters to a .266 average (167-for-628) with 111 strikeouts over the course of his career. Saunders owns a 2.70 ERA (12 ER in 40.0 IP) with 13 walks and 28 strikeouts in 6 games against National League West teams in his career, while opponents have hit .214 in those games.

Saunders was selected to his first All-Star Game in 2008 after posting a 12-5 record prior to the break and went on to set career-highs with 17 wins, 198.0 innings pitched, 103 strikeouts and a 3.41 ERA. He was selected by the Angels in the first round (12th overall) of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.

Corbin, 21, has compiled a 17-5 record and 4.20 ERA in 33 games (32 starts) during two seasons in the Angels organization from 2009-10. He has limited right-handed hitters to a .262 average (73-for-309) over the course of his career. Corbin compiled a 13-3 record and 3.87 ERA (51 ER in 118.2 IP) with 28 walks and 106 strikeouts over 20 starts between Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Cedar Rapids this season. He held opponents to 2 runs or fewer in 11 of his 20 games and pitched at least 6.0 innings in 14 of those games. Corbin was selected by the Angels in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.

Rodriguez, 25, compiled a 49-41 record and 4.54 ERA in 261 games (106 starts) during nine seasons in the Angels organization from 2002-10. He went 0-1 with a 5.58 ERA (22 ER in 30.2 IP) in 18 relief appearances over five different stints with the big league club last year and appeared in one game for the Angels this season. Rodriguez also posted a 5-3 record and 3.04 ERA (17 ER in 50.1 IP) with 10 saves, 15 walks and 30 strikeouts over 37 games with Triple-A Salt Lake this season. He was signed by the Angels as a non-drafted free agent on July 20, 2001.
