For an area that has been the team's strength, the Angels certainly have a lot of issues with their starting rotation right now.

RHP Jerome Williams remains on the DL, though he might have to return soon. RHP Dan Haren is scheduled to have his back examined when the team returns to California this week after he finally admitted that ongoing stiffness has been a significant factor in his poor season.

And RHP Ervin Santana had one of the worst starts of his career Wednesday in Cleveland, adding another low to his very uneven season. Santana lasted 1 1/3 innings, retiring four of the 13 batters he faced and allowing eight runs in a 12-3 loss to the Indians.

Santana is 4-9 with a 5.75 ERA. Over his past eight starts, he has allowed 38 earned runs in 43 2/3 innings (7.83 ERA).

"We definitely need Ervin to pick it up," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after Wednesday's loss. "He's a guy we're counting on in our rotation right now. (Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher) has been working on a lot of different things with him. We need him to find it and be able to pitch like some of the good games he pitched earlier in the season for us."

Santana offered little in the way of insight into how he expects to turn his season around in the second half.

"I've been doing the same things I've been doing all year but it's been an up-and-down year," he said. "I just have to refocus and fix the little things.

"Just throw strikes. That's it. ... Just focus on hitting the target. That's not the easy part. That's the hard part. I think that's the key."
