CLEVELAND (AP) -- Dan Haren pitched eight strong innings for Los Angeles though Albert Pujols remained homerless as the Angels defeated the Cleveland Indians 2-1 on Saturday. Torii Hunter hit a solo homer for Los Angeles, which snapped a five-game losing streak after a cold drizzle delayed the start of the game 147 minutes. Pujols went 1 for 4 with his single during a first-inning rally giving the Angels a 1-0 lead off Jeanmar Gomez (1-1). Hunter's homer in the fourth made it 2-0. The Angels have hit only five homers in their last 104 innings. Haren (1-1) made the lead stand up. The right-hander allowed four hits and struck out seven. Jack Hannahan's two-out RBI single got Cleveland within 2-1 in the fourth. Scott Downs worked a perfect ninth for his first save. It was only Downs' second save in the last three seasons and the Angels' second in eight chances this year as Los Angeles improved to 1-6 in one-run games. The left-handed Downs was put into the closer's role in place of young right-hander Jordan Walden on Friday by manager Mike Scioscia. Pujols still hasn't gone deep in an Angels uniform, a streak of 21 games and 84 at-bats. He has not connected since Sept. 22, an overall stretch of 113 at-bats, and remains stuck at 445 career homers. The first baseman did hit five homers in the 2011 postseason, including three in the World Series, to help the St. Louis Cardinals win it all. He then signed a 240 million, 10-year contract as a free agent with the Angels. The Indians have a team-wide power drought. They haven't hit a homer in 10 games, their longest streak in nearly 30 years. Cleveland went 14 games without a homer from April 10-22, 1983. In the Angels' first inning, Howie Kendrick drew a one-out walk, took third on Pujols' hit and scored on a single by Kendrys Morales that bounced just beyond the reach of two infielders for a 1-0 lead. Gomez struck out a career-high seven over six innings. The right-hander gave up five hits, two runs and two walks. NOTES: Angels RHP Ervin Santana is scheduled to start Sunday -- his first appearance against Cleveland since pitching a no-hitter at Progressive Field on July 27. ... Cleveland has 99 walks, most in the majors. ... Hunter's homer left him four runs shy of 1,000 for his career. ... Pujols needs two runs for 1,300. ... The Angels have used 19 different lineups in 21 games. ... The poor weather kept Indians OF Shin-Soo Choo from testing his strained left hamstring in pregame workouts. Choo has not played since the eighth inning Tuesday.

Angels still waiting on Pujols to find stroke

Albert Pujols came to the plate four times Sunday afternoon, and four times he made outs. Ground ball to third. Ground ball to short. Ground ball to third. Strikeout. Condense the Angels' offensive malaise into one batter and that's what you get. Pujols struggles, his teammates struggle. The Angels return home Monday after going 1-5 on a road trip through Tampa Bay and...

St. Louis Cardinals lineup better with balance and without Pujols

The St. Louis Cardinals lost a huge part of their offense when Albert Pujols signed a 10-year, $240-million deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but that also forced the team to build a more balanced lineup. Now every spot in the order consistently pushes across enough runs to put the Cardinals atop the NL Central as April comes to a close. But, the margin for error is much...

Cardinals have moved on well minus Pujols

After their biggest stars left town this past offseason, the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers had plenty of doubters. That'll happen when two of the best hitters in baseball now, and maybe ever are no longer in your lineup. And despite signing other power hitters to try filling those enormous gaps, both teams had consented there was no replacing an Albert Pujols or...

This Is The Best Albert Pujols Photoshop You Will See This Week

Aw, at least your beard is neatly trimmed. Yesterday, I examined the slump of Albert Pujols and his inability to hit a home run so far this season, as he and his Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are settling themselves into quite the hole. The Halos lost their 4th consecutive game yesterday – the Tampa Bay Rays won 4-3 thanks to a walk-off bomb from Brandon Allen – and are now 9...

Game Recap 4/28/12 -- Haren to the Rescue -- Angels 2 Indians 1

Okay so it wasn't exactly a perfect return to form for the Angels but when your nine games out of first and eight games under .500, any win is a good one. The offense continued to sputter, with the exception of Torii Hunter. But Dan Haren put the team on his back and delivered the Angels a chance to win just their second series of the year. Baby steps, people, baby steps.Angels...

It's time for Angels to find a quck fix

And you thought the Red Sox were the Titanic. Hah! The S.S. Valentine is the QE2 compared to the S.S. Pujols, also known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Some of the Angels' struggles are predictable; they began the season with ill-fitting parts in both their lineup and bullpen. Some of the club's problems also will auto-correct; Albert Pujols isn't going to...

Buy Lowest

Every year, we hear advice about how it's time to "buy low" on struggling stars like Albert Pujols, Giancarlo Stanton and Robinson Cano. "Get them now for cheap before they heat up!" Except that the market for superstars - at least in competitive leagues - usually doesn't move much after one bad month. (Whether it should in these cases is another question...

Indians 4, Angels 0

Derek Lowe pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning and the Cleveland Indians scored three runs on Angels errors to beat Los Angeles 4-0 Sunday. Lowe (4-1) retired 12 batters on ground balls, including Albert Pujols three times. Pujols also struck out against reliever Chris Perez, extending his career-long homerless streak to 117 at-bats. Ervin Santana (0-5), in his first...
