It's as if even nature itself couldn't stand the anticipation of the 2012 Detroit Tigers season, which got under way, sort of, Wednesday afternoon against the Mudhens. For the first time in more than a decade, Detroit played an exhibition game against its Triple-A affiliate -- the day before the season officially begins at Comerica Park against the Boston Red Sox. Exhibition or not, it felt like Opening Day. The capacity crowd of 12,000 started arriving more than two hours before the game, and some tickets were priced at 110 apiece on stubhub.com on Tuesday. Fifth Third Field is about 60 miles south of Detroit, but it was like a miniature Comerica Park, with most fans sporting Tigers caps, T-shirt...

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) -- Detroit slugger Prince Fielder was on the move Tuesday, stealing a base and then getting thrown out at the plate in the Tigers' 13-8 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Fielder grounded into a forceout in the third inning. One out later, the burly slugger stole second for his first spring training swipe since 2008. Jhonny Peralta later singled and Fielder tried...

Fielder, Young go deep in Tigers' win over Jays

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Drew Smyly started fast and then faded in his first outing since winning a job in Detroit's rotation, but the Tigers got home runs from Prince Fielder and Delmon Young in an 11-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. Smyly has only one year of professional experience and has never pitched above Double-A, but he beat out Duane Below for the final...

Tigers place Inge on 15-day DL

The Detroit Tigers have placed infielder Brandon Inge on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin. The move is retroactive to March 30 and means there should be room for infielder Danny Worth on Detroit's opening day roster. Inge has been trying to earn regular playing time again after hitting .197 in 2011. He's even attempting to move from third base to second...

Faces change, stakes the same for Brewers, Cards

During the run-up to last year's NL championship series, the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers openly acknowledged something most people already knew: The two division rivals didn't like each other very much. The Cardinals went on to earn ultimate bragging rights in one of baseball's most spirited rivalries last season, knocking the Brewers out of the playoffs...

Report: Joey Votto Close to Extension With Reds That Could Surpass $200 Million

With Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder cashing in on big pay days this offseason, it became abundantly clear that Reds first baseman Joey Votto could eventually do the same. Votto is under contract through 2013 as a result of an extension he signed last winter, but the Reds clearly want to make sure the two-time All-Star stays put for the foreseeable future. That's why the Reds...

Detroit Tigers: Championship or Bust

Championship or bust. It is a phrase often associated with professional sports franchises like the Yankees, Lakers, Red Wings, Patriots, and most recently the Miami Heat. This year that phrase can be applied to the Detroit Tigers. This offseason the Tigers made a huge splash in free agency by signing All Star first basemen Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract. Fielder...
