According to MLB.com, the Cleveland Indians have expressed major interest in slugging first basemen Carlos Pena. Pena is already making 5 million in 2012 from the Chicago Cubs, so it might be smart to offer him a 1 year deal around 6-7 million. That would be a base of 12 million for the year, and easily doable for any team looking to add some pop. The Indians aren’t the best slugging team in the world so it makes all the sense in the world to sign Pena. Pena brings a left handed presence to the middle of the order, and he’ll be able to play a good first base. The Indians currently don’t have a ton of options over there right now as Matt LaPorta hasn’t turned into what he was supposed to be when he was traded for CC Sabathia a few years ago. This would be a great 1 year sign as Pena is also a great clubhouse guy, and when you have enough young talent the way Cleveland does, adding a good professional is always a good idea.

Hoynes: Indians Covet Carlos Pena, Need Ownership Approval

Per The Plain Dealer’s Paul Hoynes, the Cleveland Indians front office feels that veteran slugger Carlos Pena could be the answer to their gaping hole at first base.  The only issue, which has historically been a big one, is the ownership team’s willingness to provide the funds to acquire a non-basement-level free agent. Hoynes states that Chris Antonetti and Company...

The BP First Take: Friday, January 13 by Daniel Rathman

Carlos Pena is well on his way to being baseball’s “I’ve Been Everywhere” man. Heading into his age-34 season, Pena has been with Texas, Oakland, Detroit, Boston, Tampa Bay, and Chicago, and he is likely to add a seventh organization to that list by the end of the offseason. For comparison, Matt Stairs had only worn five different big-league uniforms at the...

Rumor: Pineda, Kuroda, and Carlos Pena could be next

The Yankees made two big moves Friday night dealing Jesus Montero to the Mariners for Michael Pineda and then they signed Hiroki Kuroda. Now they have to replace their DH and as Jon Heyman of CBS Sports suggested, Carlos Pena could be their man. Pena, 33, was actually in the Yankees system at one point and they have been interested in adding him in the recent past. Now it looks...

Tribe News: Kotchman, Pena, D Lee, or El Caballo? First Base Options Galore

Do you all get the feeling that I write one of the pieces every single week? Its probably because I do! When we last spoke about the Indians on-going search for a middle of the order bat, things seemed to be veteran first baseman Carlos Pena. With the turn of each calendar day inching us closer and closer to Spring Training, some sort of decision has to be made. There are three...

Yankees Looking For Hitting, Carlos Pena On "Radar"

Now that the Yankees have addressed their pitching issues with two major transactions, the club is looking to add some offense, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.  Carlos Pena is "now on their radar," and Heyman says the Bronx Bombers could be looking at other hitters as well. Pena, a Scott Boras client, hit .225/.357/.462 with 28 homers for the Cubs last season. ...

Indians Interested In Carlos Pena

The Indians like Carlos Pena and asked ownership if they could make a deal for the 33-year-old Scott Boras client work, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer tweets. Pena would provide the Indians with a power bat at first base and make the team's lineup even more left-handed than it already is. Matt LaPorta and Carlos Santana figure to get most of the playing time...

Cleveland Indians GM Chris Antonetti works on making that first decision

GM Chris Antonetti is still pursuing a hitter, likely a first baseman, to help the Indians' offense. Could it be Carlos Pena? Or perhaps Casey Kotchman?

Adding first baseman a perk, but not imperative

The question now is whether the Indians can avoid striking out on acquiring a first baseman before Spring Training. Cleveland is known to have interest in free agents Carlos Pena and Casey Kotchman, but the team has also been checking in on most available options.

Qualified, with a qualifier

They shipped out troublesome former ace Carlos Zambrano, let top hitter Aramis Ramirez leave in free agency and decided against bringing back power hitter Carlos Pena. So what do the Cubs do with the big-ticket holdover they couldn’t move this winter? They bat Alfonso Soriano cleanup, of course. This could be where the Cubs’ winter of disconnect-from-the-past takes them as the...
