Catcher Miguel Montero was held out of Arizona's starting lineup Tuesday and is not expected to play Wednesday, manager Kirk Gibson said, but the Diamondbacks do not believe his strained left groin is DL-threatening. Montero, who suffered the injury while making a quick move after a foul popup, was replaced by pinch hitter Henry Blanco in the sixth inning Monday. Blanco had three hits and an RBI and threw out two runners attempting to steal second base in an 8-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, and Konrad Schmidt was recalled from Class AAA Reno to add catching depth. "We don't think it's 15 days, but at the same time we don't want to push him. We'll take a couple of days and see how he progresses," manager Kirk Gibson said. Montero leads the D-backs with 21 RBI, three more than left fielder Jason Kubel, while hitting .255 with five doubles and one home run. Montero has five hits and five RBI in his last six games, and his two-run double ...

The Diamondbacks designated third baseman Cody Ransom for assignment on Monday, bringing to an end his extended slump that followed a red-hot start after he was called up to the majors on April 18. Infielder Josh Bell was recalled from Triple-A Reno to fill Ransom's roster spot. Bell, 25, hit .381 with nine doubles, four home runs and 30 RBIs in 26 games with the Aces. He was...

Hudson on track for Sunday return to rotation

PHOENIX Except for the haircut, Daniel Hudson looked the same when he returned to the Diamondbacks clubhouse Tuesday. His appearance Monday was what mattered, and his strong showing has the Diamondbacks looking toward his return to the starting rotation this weekend. Hudson gave up two runs in five innings in a rehab start at Class Triple-A Reno, an outing that left him positioned...

Diamondbacks recall 3B Bell, cut INF Ransom

The Arizona Diamondbacks have recalled third baseman Josh Bell from Triple-A Reno and designated infielder Cody Ransom for assignment. Bell was batting .381 with nine doubles, a triple, four home runs and 30 RBIs in 26 games for Reno. The 25-year-old switch-hitter was in Arizona's starting lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Bell, 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds...

Minor-leaguer Bell handed Diamondbacks' third base job

Josh Bell is a starting third baseman in the majors again. The Arizona Diamondbacks purchased Bell from Class AAA Reno and installed him as the starting third baseman Monday, a move the D-backs had been mulling on their recent road trip as a way to kick-start their sluggish offense. He was 1 for 3 with a single two strikeouts and a fielding error in a 6-1 loss to the Dodgers. ...

D-backs have no plans to demote Putz

While several other teams have jockeyed with the closer position this season, the Diamondbacks plan to stick with J.J. Putz despite early-season inconsistencies. "Oh, yeah; no question," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "I just think he's the guy. He's our closer and nothing's changed. It's as simple as that." Putz brings a strong leadership...

D-backs bounce back in a big way

PHOENIX The Diamondbacks blew off blowing a five-run lead pretty easily. A day after a most discouraging defeat, the D-backs reacted with an 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, preventing a series sweep with their highest scoring game of the season while taking some the sting off an 8-7 loss Tuesday. It was the kind of all-around game the D-backs have not had...

Putz remains D-backs' closer through struggles

The Angels demoted closer Jordan Walden after a sporadic start.Nothing like that is happening here.J. J. Putz will remain the Diamondbacks closer, manager Kirk Gibson said with an exclamation point Wednesday. Oh, yeah. No question, Gibson said at his pregame briefing. I just think...

NL West Quarter Report Card

Arizona Diamondbacks Hitters: F. The D'Backs slugged their way to an division title last season, but that hasn't been the case this season. No Arizona player has more than 5 homers. Even Justin Upton has been affected by the team-wide power outage as he currently sits with a puny .373 slugging percentage. Injuries have certainly played a role in their struggles as Stephen...

D-backs feeling left out again

PHOENIX The Diamondbacks shook things by adding a hitter to the roster Monday, but nothing could overcome their recent susceptibility to left-handed pitchers. The D-backs have faced two kinds of pitchers lately, righties and wrongies. They have beaten the last four right-handers they have faced and lost to the last five lefties. Chris Capuano, a former D-back who has persevered...

The 2012 Minor League Report – Week 8

There was plenty of buzz in minor league news last week with three top prospects getting promoted to Triple-A. Trevor Bauer, the third player picked in the 2011 Amateur Draft, was promoted by the Arizona Diamondbacks to Triple-A and allowed one run in eight innings with 11 strikeouts in his first start there. Between two levels, he now has a 1.60 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 56 1...

The Diamondbacks, who squandered a five-run lead going into the seventh, took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the eighth on Lyle...

Brewers-Diamondbacks Preview

The last time the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers met, one game separated both teams from the NL championship series. Neither team is playing as if a postseason rematch is in the offing. In a matchup of the Game 1 and 5 starters from the NL division series, Arizona's Ian Kennedy tries to avoid losing a career-high fifth consecutive start while Yovani Gallardo looks...
