After a 5-2 homestand, the Baltimore Orioles started off their six-game road trip in Detroit and ran into a roadblock … a pitcher named Max Scherzer. The tall righty dominated the Orioles last night in the motor city and helped the Tigers earn a 5-1 victory. Although Chris Davis hit his league leading 24th home run in the second inning, the Baltimore offense was stymied by Scherzer, who threw six innings and struck out ten. Pitcher Drew Smyly threw three scoreless innings for the save. Meanwhile, on the mound for the Orioles, Jake Arrieta looked like his old self – the not-so-good version. He lasted only 4 2/3 innings, and once again struggled with his command and perhaps his confidence. Arrieta gave up five runs on ten hits on Monday night and once again you wondered in your mind, “Lord, will this guy ever figure it out?” At this point, who knows? Could he ever be a reliable arm for the Orioles at all? Is he Daniel Cabrera, part II? He did nothing in Triple-A to warrant a promotion; however, Arrieta was needed to due to an illness to a pitcher and Kevin Gausman being sent down. The result last night …little has changed in the sentiment that fans have towards the hurler. Arrieta gave up two runs in the second as Miguel Cabrera took him deep for his 19th home run, Austin Jackson plated in a run in the third and he gave up two more in the fifth. He got optioned down to Triple-A Norfolk after the game. Zach Britton was promoted to the majors, and will start tonight in Detroit … against Justin Verlander. After a good week at home, the Orioles starting pitching is once again in a state of flux. Then again, Buck Showalter has done a pretty good job in these circumstances. If they can get through the series with the Tigers taking the next two games and do well this weekend against a surging Blue Jays squad, the Orioles will be in excellent shape.
