On Wednesday morning, Jake Arrieta was a reliever -- demoted from the Baltimore Orioles' rotation last week. The former Opening Day starter was trying to turn his season around.

By Wednesday night, he was the man, having thrown seven innings as an emergency starter in place of injured lefty Brian Matusz.

Arrieta cruised into the middle innings and battled through the seventh, allowing one run in his final frame. He improved to 3-8 with Baltimore's 7-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, earning his first victory since May 2.

The right-hander allowed seven hits and walked one, and he struck out nine on 108 pitches. He also earned his manager's confidence, as Buck Showalter indicated Arrieta would make his next start.

Matusz, who injured his nose when he fouled off a bunt in a pregame drill Tuesday, has been penciled in to start Friday at Atlanta.

Arrieta had run support against the Pirates, and that allowed him to settle in.

He was on regular rest, and he also understood the magnitude of the opportunity. The club had the option to send him to Class AAA Norfolk, but instead stuck him in the bullpen to figure things out. He had gone 0-6 with a 9.34 ERA in his previous seven starts.

He didn't need any short stints in relief -- just a wake-up call.
