A dominant outing from Tommy Milone resulted in a 6-3 victory for the A’s over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night – and the 40th consecutive save for closer Grant Balfour, tying the A’s franchise record previously set by Dennis Eckersley.
Wade Davis looked dominant for the Royals through the first two innings, but the A’s got to him in the third: a one-out double from Josh Reddick followed by a pop single by Eric Sogard gave Oakland a 1-0 lead.
John Jaso led off the fifth with a walk. Reddick (who Glen Kuiper and Ray Fosse noted had shaved his mustache prior to the game) cracked a triple into the right-center gap, scoring Jaso and putting Josh on third with nobody out. Two batters later, Coco Crisp drove Reddick home with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the A’s a 3-0 lead.
Milone sailed through the sixth, allowing a one-out single to David Lough but retiring Jarrod Dyson and Johnny Giovatella to end the threat of a potential rally.

Alex Gordon's status is still up in the air, but it looks like he will avoid the disabled list. Gordon slammed into the outfield wall, hit his head and his hip, and is plenty sore. But he should be alright without an extended absence.
According to Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, Gordon will miss a couple more games at least, but the Royals are hoping to have him...

Prospects will rip your guts out. For every Trout and Harper, there are disappointments. There have been no bigger disappointments in the last year than Justin Smoak and Eric Hosmer. Both seemed to symbolize their respective team's failures. Both play first base, a position that requires offense. Neither provided any in 2012. Smoak's failures go back further than Hosmer...
