The A's thoughts aren't all that much on baseball at the moment. The team is more concerned right now

about Brandon McCarthy's condition.

McCarthy was struck on the right side of the head by a line drive in the fourth inning Wednesday and he

had two hours of surgery on Wednesday night to alleviate pressure on his brain caused by epidural

hemorrhaging.

On Friday, A's trainer Nick Paparesta said that McCarthy "absolutely" remains in a life-threatening

situation. Paparesta said that the first three full days after brain surgery are the most difficult,

because of potential complications, and McCarthy was on day two on Friday.

Paparesta said that the only immediate focus is keeping McCarthy alive, and then the next concern after

that would be basic motor functions, so that McCarthy can lead a regular life.

Only after those things are achieved would there be any focus on fine motor skills, the kinds involved

in baseball, so there is no prognosis yet about McCarthy's future in the sport.

There were encouraging signs Friday, according to Paparesta, who said that McCarthy was able to get out

of bed three times, he was able to sit in a chair and he ate solid food. He said that McCarthy also is able

to recognize people, and that while McCarthy is not speaking much, he is able to talk.

A head-trauma expert, UCSF chief of neurological surgery Dr. Geoffrey Manley, told the San Francisco

Chronicle on Thursday that most patients treated promptly for epidural hematomas are able to return to full

and active lives, and that athletes usually can resume their sports.

Manager Bob Melvin, whose team beat Seattle 6-1 Friday, said that rookie right-hander Dan Straily,

recalled Friday, will fill in in the rotation and he will start on Tuesday.
