Ronny Cedeno tripled hours after signing with the Houston Astros, who beat the Miami Marlins 4-1 Sunday in a game shortened to 4 1-2 innings because of rain. Released by St. Louis on March 19, Cedeno agreed to a one-year deal with Houston and immediately was inserted into the lineup at shortstop. He went 1 for 2, grounding into an inning-ending forceout in the second and tripling to right in the fourth against Jacob Turner. Brett Wallace hit his third homer, a two-run drive in the third. The Astros first round pick castoff club

The projections for 2013 for the Houston Astros are all pretty grim. And that is understandable considering the team lost 107 games in 2012, have to switch leagues in 2013 and have a projected 2013 payroll of $14.6 million. Baseball Prospectus expects the team to lose 97 games in 2013. And any kind of optimism for the Astros to surprise anyone in the coming year would be supremely...

Astros one cut away from finalizing 1st AL roster

The Houston Astros are one cut away from finalizing their first American League roster. Brandon Barnes and Fernando Martinez won the backup outfield spots Monday as the Astros reduced the roster to 26 players. They will cut one more pitcher before they open the major league season Sunday night against the Texas Rangers. ''We still have a couple more decisions to make with...

30 Prospects in 30 Days: Christian Yelich – OF – Miami Marlins

21 year-old Christian Yelich is an outstanding young outfield prospect for the Miami Marlins. Listed at 6’4 189 pounds, Yelich has what scout Keith Law called “the prettiest swing in the minors.” Yelich is a very intriguing prospect because despite his young age, he has an advanced bat (as showcased by his Spring Training outburst so far) – slash line of .364/.451/.818! Although...

Have the A’s found their right-handed platoon option at first base? The A’s announced on Saturday they have claimed first baseman Nate Freiman off waivers from the Astros. Freiman, a 6-foot-8 (!!!!!!!!), 250-pound right-handed batter, hit .298/.370/.502 with 24 homers and 105 RBI in 137 games with the Padres’ Double-A affiliate last season. In 19 games this spring in Astros...

Marlins need help to sell opener tix

Maybe everyone in Miami is so preoccupied with the Heat's winning streak that baseball isn't on the minds of South Floridians. The Miami Marlins' home opener is Monday, April 8, but it looks like the team is in panic mode to sell tickets. The franchise, about to begin a second season in its new ballpark, has turned to GroupOn for some help . Most fanbases are excited...

More Miami Marlins Hilarity: Placido Polanco, Cleanup Hitter

Placido Polanco played for the Phillies from 2002-2005 and 2010-2012. Placido Polanco will always be one of my favorite Phillies players. Granted, most of it was for his 2002-2005 tenure. A professional hitter who made contact, in his prime he was considered one of the top two-hole hitters in the...

Three Strikes, You’re Out.

Ah, what a difference a year makes.  It seems so long ago that the excitement of a new ballpark, a new roster flush with talent and an exciting new manager was the talk of baseball.  In the spring of 2012, Marlins fans had added a new word to their vocabulary, optimism.  After all, the normally frugal Marlins had gone on a free agent blitz, making moves to sign big name free agents...
