Matt Dominguez hit a three-run homer, Tyler Greene added a solo shot and the Houston Astros slowed Cincinnati's run to the NL Central title with a 5-1 win over the Reds on Sunday. Edgar Gonzalez allowed two hits and one run in five innings against the Reds, who came in with a magic number of 14 for eliminating second-place St. Louis. Gonzalez (2-0) walked one and struck out six, and the Astros limited Cincinnati to five hits overall while winning a road series for the first time since early June against the White Sox. The Reds, who also lost two of three against Philadelphia in the first series of their nine-game homestand, have lost back-to-back series for the first time since being swept by Cleveland June 18-20 and losing two of three to Minnesota June 22-24. Houston relievers Wesley Wright, Mickey Storey and Wilton Lopez combined for eight strikeouts over four shutout innings. After going 11-0 in his first 13 afternoon starts this season, Johnny Cueto has struggled in his last two. He gave up eight hits and four runs in seven innings of a 4-2 loss to Philadelphia on Labor Day and followed up by getting knocked around for four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in four innings on Sunday. Cueto (17-8) matched his season low in innings while losing a second consecutive start for the first time since July 3. The last-place Astros scored a first-inning run for the third time in the three-game series. Jimmy Paredes, Brian Bogusevic and Brett Wallace each singled to load the bases with nobody out, setting up Fernando Martinez's sacrifice fly. Houston took command with a two-out, fourth-inning rally sparked by Wallace's single to right. After Martinez walked, Dominguez drove Cueto's 1-0 pitch 368 feet into the left field seats for his third home run of the season and second three-run shot of the series against one of Cincinnati's more dominant pitchers. Dominguez's three-run homer off Aroldis Chapman on Friday gave Houston a 5-3 win. The Reds got on the board in the fourth. Joey Votto walked with one out and scored on Jay Bruce's triple to center field. The Astros got that run back on Green's 10th homer of the season, a 378-foot shot into the right field seats off of Tony Cingrani with one out in the sixth inning. Notes: Gonzalez left the game with what was described as a ''minor injury to his right foot.'' ... The Reds reported that RF Jay Bruce is the first player in major league history to hit at least 20 home runs as a rookie and then improve on that total in each of his next four seasons. ... The Astros finished 399-439-1 against the Reds in 51 seasons in the National League. Houston shifts to the AL West next season. ... Houston manager Tony DeFrancesco is hoping SS Jed Lowrie can rejoin the team in Houston after being out since July 15 with injuries to his right ankle and leg. Lowrie was 0-for-4 with two RBIs as the designated hitter for Single-A Lancaster on Saturday in the first game of a playoff series with Hudson Valley.

Gonzalez has been a pleasant surprise for Astros

The remarkable ride continues for Edgar Gonzalez. From Class AAA to unemployment to the Mexican League to a deal with the Houston Astros and the chance to provide some depth to a rotation that needed it. Elite major-league starter isn't supposed to be the destination of this train and it's way, way, way too early to predict anything like that for the 29-year-old journeyman...

Crane: Clemens may pitch for Astros

Astros owner Jim Crane says there's a possibility 50-year-old Roger Clemens could pitch for Houston this season. The Astros begin a week-long homestand on Monday that includes three games against the Cubs and four against the Phillies. Their only remaining home games after this stretch are against the Pirates and the Cardinals, two teams in postseason contention. Crane says...

MLB Rumors: Astros Should Give Roger Clemens a Spring Training Non-Roster Invite

Associated PressThe Houston Astros are most likely not going to win seventy games next year. With a young starting rotation, it would make sense for the Astros to pursue a veteran starter for the 2013 season. Not because it would put Houston over the top and have them competing for a playoff spot, but because a veteran could have a positive influence on the younger starters and limit...

The Houston Astros have released Francisco Cordero, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports. Cordero was only in Houston for a month and a half as he was acquired in late July from the Blue Jays in the massive ten player deal. Crane: Clemens may pitch for Astros this year

HOUSTON (AP) -- Astros owner Jim Crane thinks Roger Clemens' comeback could continue in Houston. That would be news to the 50-year-old right-hander, who doesn't sound too interested in the idea. Crane said Monday there's a possibility Clemens could pitch this season for the majors' worst team. "We haven't heard from Roger, so that's still up in the...

Cubs-Astros Preview

There have been few positives for the Houston Astros over the past two seasons but their recent performances at Minute Maid Park against the Chicago Cubs have been among those. After a successful series against a first-place club, the Astros will seek a sixth consecutive home win over the Cubs when the teams with the two worst records in the majors open a three-game set Monday night...

Photos from Saturday’s lone win against the Astros

The RHM crew had the pleasure of attending Saturday night’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros. Our seats were much better than the last time we saw a game, as evidenced by the much closer photos. Joey Votto exposed some skin to the crowd after his double. Once on base, he always puts on a knee brace.
