The first round pick in this year's Amateur Draft, Carlos Correa, already has a verbal agreement with the Houston Astros according to Astros owner Jim Crane (via Brian McTaggart of MLB.com). Correa is ashortstop from Puerto Rico and here's a scouting report we wrote about him: The 17-year old Correa has long arms and legs, and appears to be a good athlete, loose and coordinated even for his height. Although not fast. He has a strong body as it is, and will acquire more strength with maturity. From the videos I watched, he seems to have quick, soft hands while fielding, and reports say he has a strong arm with a quick release. Hitting, Correa possess good bat speed, full arm extension and follow through, although he has a long stride and load that should be shortened a tad in order to adjust to pro pitching. Reports say that he has potential to become an above-average power hitter. Matthew Pouliot of NBCSports.com says that Correa is expected to get around $5 million, an amount that will leave the Astros with over $6 million in their draft pool to sign the rest of their picks. He adds that Correa will begin his journey to the Major Leagues with the Astros in the Gulf Coast League later this month. Image by by ensign_beedrill under the Creative Commons License Agreement.
